Guest guest
Funny that you ask. Someone else had asked this before and I am always hesistant to respond because of potential backlash. But I will say that last year I dropped ADA because I had just had a baby and my money would be better placed elsewhere. I thought that I would renew after I got a handle on life with a child, but honestly, I've not missed it. I do realize that they do things that I don't see that help better the profession, but I just couldn't renew it. Then I found out that they are linked with Monsanto and that sealed it for me. Anyway, my two cents worth since you asked. > > Well I didn't pay my ADA dues this year. I just couldn't justify the > high > cost to my husband. Guest guest
Jen- I have been an ADA member since I graduated college. There were years that I questioned the benefit of ADA membership and my employers have never covered the cost. These past two years I have found membership to DPGs to be incredible. It has provided me with a professional network in the areas I am interested in. I love this list serv for a hodge podge of nutrition related topics, but not nearly as in depth as the DPG list serves and newsletters. I can easily say that the money I spent on ADA dues and the Nutrition entrepreneur DPG was easily made up by a few private practice clients. I have no regrets. Am I thrilled about some of the corporate relationships that ADA has- no. But as a member I have a voice to let them know and you can be sure I will not be visiting their booths at FCNE. Guest guest
I have not belonged to ADA for more than 10 years. I have found networking opportunities that give me better science information and better business opportunities as well. I know many value the specialty practice groups, and I can understand that. But truthfully, I kept the membership as long as I did because I was afraid to let it go, let it go for financial reasons, and haven't really missed it. Guest guest
Personally: I haven't renewed in several years for similar reasons and honestly haven't missed it either...no- I don't receive the journal anymore- but I also rarely read it through unless something particularly interesting jumped out at me.... and I have YOU GUYS and your wealth of knowledge, opinions and information -- in addition to an affordable subscription to Today's Dietitian...so I feel fine... BUT- I am negotiating with myself in regards to renewing this time around only because I am considering attending the ADA- FNCE in Chicago.... and an ADA membership offsets the registration fees..... ok- that's my 2 cents, too!! Guest guest
When I was a senior in college, my advisor told me that I should never let my ADA membership lapse. I have followed her advice for the past 47 years. I don't know why. I rarely have time to read the journal, I go to FNCE only because my daughter is an RD and goes and we have a wonderful mother daughter week. My facility requires my ADA and CDR credentials\ so that is the main reason I keep my membership. Madalyn Re: ADA Dues Funny that you ask. Guest guest
I heard the same thing back in my Internship 30+ years ago but wasn't registration for ADA and CDR actually one entity? Guest guest
Originally there was one registration. ADA and CDR separated some time ago. I can't recall why. Guest guest
I let mine lapse when I stopped working full time, but now that I am back at work, I find that if I have a policy or legislative question, the local, state and national association won't talk to me without being a member, hence I am re-upping my ADA membership. ( I never let my CDR elapse!) ADA has vital information about MNT that is important to all RDs doing counseling, so that one reason there might encourage all non members to re join.
