Just a quick question regarding BMI and coding. One of the coders at my

institution recently called and said the dietitians needed to document

BMI on all patients. Some the pts are not seen by the rds based on

screening, los, etc.  I asked her if a BMI chart would help and

she replied-no , it has to be documented by a dietitian .  I

cannot find a regulation, nor do we have a policy indicating

this.    Before I contact the administrators I would

like to look up regulations on this , etc and see what other food and

nutrition depts do.  We have no problem doing BMI when we see pts

but to send someone down to medical records after the pts have been

dc'd to do a BMI on someone not even seen by a RD is ridiculous.

Thank you in advance. Kim
