Guest guest
Hi I'm and I just wanted to say how glad I am to be part of this group. I'm 58, I was asthmatic as a child growing up in a smokers home in the coalmining valleys of South Wales.I " grew " out of it " and then I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis in my mid 20's. I had an upper lobe removed in the UK when I was 28 and it gave me about 10 " good " years " The doctors told me I'd never work full time again. I've since moved to New York , I work at a very demanding full time job teaching ceramics ( mold and dust ) I keep everything damp My lung function tests are abysymally low , my pulmo Dr says I'm his " miracle " poster " child " . There are days when I can hardly make it up the stairs to my first floor apartment, but I pace myself and I get there. Yes I know those horrible coughing attacks, they're embarrasing ( there's nowhere to hide ) and its exhausting. But I like to think of it as our body telling us that it needs to get rid of gunk. I keep my meds to a minimum with diaphragm breathing , daily chest percussion , no dairy ( creates mucous) Nacetyl Cysteine to dilute the mucous and I SIP water all day and drink lots of tea ( its a bronchodilator). I think of my lungs as a chopping board with lots of indentations in it , if i don't keep them clean then the bacteria will fester. If only there was " Scrubbing Bubbles " for the lungs..ha ha My meds are Advair and albuterol on my portable nebulizer. I've seen a significant decrease in infections since I've been prescribed THE VEST Does anyone else have one? , I think its wonderful.I do my nebulizer when I do 2x25 min sessions daily, I then follow it with the Acapella (I find it much better than the Flutter valve )because you can lie down and tip your body while you're doing it. Even when I'm feeling OK it brings up the gunk and gets AIR flowing through my lungs.I usually finish off with Glottis breathing and huffing .It really works and keeps me functioning. Summer is here and I'm on vacation and I'm getting lots of sleep ( I'm usually up at 5am ) that really makes a difference and its my ongoing goal to get to bed earlier during term time. Hope this helps you Bronchiectasis doesn't have to control you! .......really
Guest guest
Could you please give more information on “glottis breathing?” I’m not getting much when searching the internet. Thanks for the encouraging post: I, too, was diagnosed with bronchiectasis in my early twenties. I’ve managed it fairly well, but have had a hard winter with a pseudomonas infection that was hard to overcome. I’m 45 and work in manufacturing as a process improvement consultant. I just got the vest (currently just on “demo”), and am trying to find a pulmo doctor who will be a little more aggressive. I moved to Iowa a couple of years ago, and we’ve been pretty disappointed with the health care systems here: very averse to use of antibiotics, etc. Thanks, From: bronchiectasis [mailto:bronchiectasis ] On Behalf Of draigferch Sent: Thursday, July 03, 2008 10:48 AM To: bronchiectasis Subject: good morning Hi I'm and I just wanted to say how glad I am to be part of this group.
