Guest guest
I have a very good friend who is have a conization next Friday. She is at this point because she has had abnormal Pap smears on and off for several years. The cryosurgery was a temporary cure but the abnormal smear came back within 18 months. My understanding from talking to her is: The abnormal smears are showing precancerous cells. They are recurring after the cryosurgery and so are persistent and of more serious concern for converting to cancer. She has seen multiple experts in the Washington, DC area and flown to Phoenix to see the expert on cervical cancer is the USA. The opinions varied, with many saying to have a hysterectomy and be rid of it. She was not comfortable with that idea. Dr. in Phoenix recommended the conization with a cross section biopsy deep in her cervix. This should remove the top layers of cells and tell them what is deeper in the tissue, and whether a hysterectomy will be necessary to eliminate all the precancerous cells or if the deep cells have already converted to cancerous. The whole idea is that once it has converted to cervical cancer the long-term prognosis is poor and so getting rid of the precancerous cells is a good idea. Hope this helps.
