Guest guest
My clue was yeast and urinary tract infections. " " on 05/08/2001 02:44:33 PM Please respond to diabetes To: diabetes cc: Subject: Original Diabetes dx Hi - I too started losing some weight. Also, reoccuring yeast infections. Then I seemed to be thirsty at night. I would take a gallon jug of milk to bed with me and sip on it throughout the night. I was lethargic after meals- had to lie down practically. My feet started tingling about in January (if I remember correctly). A friend who I was talking/complaining to had just read an article in the Washington Post about diabetes. She said my symptoms were a match. It took me till mid Febuary to go to the dr and sure enough -my fasting bs was 275. It has really changed my life. Right now I am having problems with pain in my feet. Has your tingly numbness changed or gotten better/worse? Thanks- " Fast forward three or four years. My wife said I should see the doctor because I had been losing weight and unexplained weight loss should be checked out. I agreed but said it pertained to rapid weight loss and I had been losing gradually over that time. I attributed it to having cut way down on the amount of beer I had been drinking since I seemed to have lost my taste for it. Coincidentally, I was also acquiring a sweet tooth which I never had and would buy a liter bottle of cherry coke and a candy bar whenever I would go for gas! She kept after me to see the doctor and I finally did when my feet and calves started getting tingly and numb. I remember thinking, " This ain't good. " I also didn't seem to have any of the classic symptoms. In retrospect I did have excessive thirst but I attributed it the heat as it was, after all, the middle of summer. I remember one day it was so hot and every time I passed a pop machine I would buy another can (not diet, either)! Anyway, the doc gave me a fasting glucose test and my BS came back at 292. He said that normally it was probably closer to 400. I started on glucophage, bought a meter, and started reading up on diabetes. I foolishly thought it was no big deal as it sounded like basically being allergic to sugar. So big deal, I'd just quit eating sugar and that would be the end of it - NOT! That's my story and I'm sticking to it... Kossart, T2 - Currently On Insulin "
Guest guest
It's funny how all the symptoms were there, but we were either ignorant of them or just " explained " them away. I had rapid weight loss (1 lb/week) without trying real hard, but I thought I was doing good with my diet. I was tired, but with an autistic kid I was tired all the time anyway. I normally drink a lot of water, so I didn't notice the thirst. Was getting up every night at 3:00AM to use the bathroom, but I attributed it to early prostate enlargement. Had a sore on my scalp that kept coming back, but never made the connection. When the flight doc told me I had sugar in my urine, I was hoping that it was because I ate a big piece of birthday cake that morning. But when the fasting test the next day showed 264, there was no doubt about it (HbA1C was 12.2). It sure developed fast though, because a blood test done in Aug 2000 for life insurance didn't turn up anything. Good thing I already got it down to the 100 (fasting) and 120 (post-meal) range after only one month of treatment with Glucophage XR. H.
