Mother Receives Organs from Son and DaughterLOS ANGELES · April 1, 2001

Medical Reporter Virginia Baskerville

In a unique scenario, a 57-year-old Los Angeles woman has become the recipient of organs from two of her children.

At USC University Hospital, the woman received part of her 36-year-old son’s liver in September and a kidney from her 35-year-old daughter in February. The hospital held a press conference with the mother and her children in March.

The woman had both polycystic liver and kidney disease and had been undergoing kidney dialysis for more than 3 years. She initially did not want her children to donate their organs to her. "But, after considering risks and how long she may have to wait on an organ transplant list, the family agreed the living-donor program was the only option," the hospital said in a statement.

The Associated Press reported that the dual transplant represents "apparently the first time two children donated organs to a parent."

* In another patient story, USC University Hospital said that, in May 2000, an altruistic donor gave 60% of his liver to a 53-year-old stranger with hepatitis C and cirrhosis of the liver. Although it is not uncommon for people to offer to donate an organ to someone whose need for an organ has been publicized, this case is different, the hospital said, because "the donor decided to come forward and offer part of his healthy liver for transplant to whoever might need it." The 33-year-old donor said he decided to make the offer "when I read an article in the paper about the remarkable advances in transplant technology and the desperate shortage of donor organs."
