Laurie,

About your irritation on the Payton website comment about length of hospital

stay for surgery, I was just in the Hospital of the University of

Pennsylvania (HUP)this past Monday for transplant evaluation with the

transplant team. The transplant coordinator nurse who gave the initial

presentation to the small group of us said that the hospital stay is

" usually 9 to 14 days. Could be longer in certain instances. " HUP has a

printed booklet explaining the whole process (printed in 3/98) which states

that " An average stay in the hospital after a liver transplant is two to

four weeks, but your stay could be longer. " So it doesn't look like the

quote on Payton's site is that far off.

I think a good distinction that could be/should be made in these averages is

the condition of the transplant patient before the transplant. Some are in

intensive care units of hospitals with end-stage liver disease prior to

transplant while others are called in from home. According to the nurse that

gave our presentation, the former is about 20% and the latter is about 80%.

Seems to me that the " average stays " for these two different segments would

be different, throwing off any " total average. " And from what I'm reading,

PSCers would most likely be in the 80% called from home category.

Maybe this'll clear up your concern a little and ease your irritation. As

with much information about this particular condition, there ain't much

certainty about much of anything!!!

Bill--

I appreciate the info. What I'm going by is

3 transplant centers, all of whom list averages

of length of stay right at 28 days. I wonder if

Pittsburgh and the center quoted for Payton's

web page has better averages? After all, Pittsburgh

is the " creme de la creme " (sp?). I wonder how

a person could order the booklet of which you speak.

Any ideas? Thanks again for the info.

Laurie

Hi, -Brown,

Welcome to this group. I think you'll find us a friendly bunch. I, too, have

frequent ERCP's to dilate the strictures..My next one is scheduled May 28. What

part of the country do you live in? I'm in New Hampshire.
