Guest guest
Today I registered my kids (3 of them) for high school. My twins have special needs and the previous school refused to send their files (I found that out today) so they were not put in any special classes for any kind of assistance. Now it might be 2-3 weeks after school starts to get them where they belong which means they will start classes, then get switched just as they are settling in. We had so many problems at the previous school (the Catholic School where we had the drug felon) and this was just the icing on the cake. The administrators at the high school are being so wonderful. They are scrambling to see if they can get this done before school starts. The class percentages have already been worked out for how many kids they allow in regular classes that have special needs. They have aids in those classes and this really throws off the balance. They are also working with union figures too. So, I think they might pull it off. Keeping my fingers crossed. I was having severe pain today but my adrenalin kicked in and I was able to go gangbusters to get it all done. Now that it's evening I am exhausted but at least I had some of those saved spoons to help today! Becky
Guest guest
We have this problem at our school. The best thing for parents to do is keep copies of your child's files (yes you do have a right to it) and always take it with you to any new school and be sure to inform the new school in writing about your child's needs. You can even offer to go pick up records if you are near enough. Often we don't get notification from schools until late in the year and parents do not know that we have no way of knowing until it has adversely affected their children. I do think there should be some way for schools to ask but there are such tight rules on confidentiality in these cases. Federal law does allow us to fax these records, now. Hope all goes well. Guest guest
I do have copies of everything fortunately. The problem we have is that the Catholic School principal REFUSED to send any of it. By law they have to so at least now it's documented as they are many complaints and potential lawsuits against this place. Actually, it probably helped the situation as the new principal is wonderful and is weeding out the problems in the school. The secretary/registrar refused after the old principal left so she is one they need to get out. I believe they needed one more official complaint against her and coming from a public school registrar might be what was needed to finally end it. He now has two more to get out of there and the complaints against them will start when school starts as they are teachers. It's been a long ordeal but in the end it will benefit all of the children. I physically went to the school to get the files and the secretary/registrar refused to give them to me. Guess I just had to get the train rolling and I did that when I brought forth the information of the drug felon in the school (principal's sister). This morning at 8:30 I received a call from the high school principal and they have set up our IEP and 504 meetings for next Tuesday so it's all taken care of. They all know me from my first child there with all of his problems and also years ago I used to work there so they knew me when I was a nice person (before the RA and 3 of 4 children with special needs! Ha!). Yes, the confidentiality issues make things very difficult for everyone. Fortunately, I am only 5 minutes away from the school so I can be there quickly for anything and also we fax a lot. My husbands works for the American Red Cross and he has close ties with the school because of their blood drives so all around we have good support. I am going to be babysitting for my children's PE teacher this year and that right there helps out a lot. She will be taking them to school and bringing them home. They have her first hour so they can go to school in their PE uniforms. I think even though we had a bad start, they will be okay, and if anything goes wrong, they will be willing to work with us. That's all I can ask. Today is a better day! Becky Re: [ ] School things We have this problem at our school.
