Guest guest
You know, I've never been able to explain to anyone non-EMS, fire or police the real family-hood and camaraderie that comes from being a part of these services... no matter where you go, what you do, it's a family thing. This was really driven home for me this last weekend after an EMS call I first responded to. I hadn't seen this particular crew in a while (and they were responding out-of-district for another unit, as usual <g>) and after the patient left via POV, we were picking up. The recent death of a colleague came up in conversation, just sort of a " you know about... right? " kind of thing. I replied " Yeah, I know, does he have any family that needs anything? " seriously intending to do whatever his family may have needed. Looking me right in the eye, I was reminded " Yeah, you're family, just like the rest of us. How are you doing with this? " I'm doing okay, but these particular words are the ones that remind me that it's not about what service I work with, what community I protect - I'd do that (as would most anyone else I know in the field) no matter when or where I was. It's about who I serve with, and the real family we all become. To all of you who wave at anything with lights on it, just to make whoever is driving smile; to all of you who slow down, change lanes, stop, etc. that much earlier than normal traffic when you come up on a scene; to all of those who send flowers, e-mail condolences, and warm wishes: thank you. It's your keeping that sense of family that drives the rest of us on. Mike
