AFib is where the top bit just goes completely random and the bottom bit tries

to do it's best.

AFlutter the top bit is less random but quick and there's normally several beats

of the top bit to one beat of the bottom beat. (e.g. 2:1 Flutter the top bit

could be going at 160bpm while the bottom bit does 80 bpm at 3:1 the top would

be going at 240bpm to the bottoms 80).

Thanks, Jim, can I tell the difference between flutter and afib on my

pulse? Sometimes I have felt what I would describe as a flutter in

my upper chest, but it does not show up in my pulse. The doc said

this must be something like esophageal flutter.

Actually, I think my question is, is theere a difference in treatment

or consequences between flutter and afib...

I've no idea really but at a guess if you are feeling you pulse on your wrist

you may well only pick up the ventricular beat. It's certainly recognisable on

an ecg (example at

http://www.medscape.com/31353.rhtml?srcmp=msmkt-121500)

I'd describe the ectopic beats I get in before an AFib attack as 'flutter' in my

chest but I'd describe actual atrial flutter as a jack hammer in my chest! I

suppose you may be experiencing PACs (premature atrial contractions)or indeed

what your doc says - I'd not heard of esophageal flutter until your post. (so

much to learn!)

I'm afraid I don't know enough about flutter to answer. I know many of the same

drugs are used for both and I know that some ablations work better on flutter

than on Afib but beyond that I can't help. My personal experience of flutter was

very unpleasant (I think because the atrial was pumping hard that the

palpitations were severe and fast) I think the flutter was a result of taking a

drug (either flecainide or propafanone, I can't remember which and I wasn't

taking notes in the early days).

All the best

Merry Christmas to one and all.
