Terri,

I had involuntary weight loss when the RA started. I thought it was

going to end up with me in the hospital because nothing I could do

would stop it. Finally weight lifting did the trick, but you can

still see my ribs. I assumed I could easily hit an intestine or

something if I injected into my stomach. Should you do it right in

the middle (above the navel)? Still at a 45% angle?

It's not that I have so much stomach fat, but I have this big pouch of

skin from carrying big babies for nine months each. They got

progressively bigger: 7 lbs & something, 8 lbs and something, and 9 lbs

12 oz. My stomach has never recovered, and I feel like a kangaroo.

Anyway, there's plenty of stomach skin available for injecting my

Enbrel. I think it would hurt worse to inject in the legs, as I don't

have much meat on them. Once when I injected, I got a bump. I think I

injected directly into a vein or artery, because it bled profusely and

then left that bump for several days. Sue

Jennie,

You actually want to go diagonally down from the naval. Either to the left

or to the right. So that you are actually doing it in the lower part of

your abdomen. I got at a 45 degree angle and sometimes since the newer

dosing units for Enbrel have the tinier needle I go straight in. With

people who are really thin, you can pinch a section of sking and inject in

at a 45 degree angle.

Sue,

Best place to inject in the leg is off to the side. think of it as

if you were wearing a pair of pants. the injection should be

between the seam on the side and the pleat down the top of the

pant. That way, even with little subcutaneous tissue (fatty

tissue), you will not run the risk of injecting into something like

a nerve or blood vessel. you may have hit a capillary. another

thing to try is to rub the area with your hand after the injection.

don't use the alcohol pad because it can cause more burning. but by

rubbing it with your hand, you can help distribute the medication

and decrease any bump that may occur. wow!! those babies did get

bigger. my mom was afraid to have any more kids because my sister

and I were each 8lb & something, then my brother came around and he

was 13lb & something!!! good luck to you.....Marina in Ohio
