Guest guest
, I'm glad your appt went well. He sounds like a good rheumy to have! My advice to anyone on prednisone is to take extra calcium, as it is possible to have some bone loss even on low doses (my personal experience). You can take up to 1500 mgs a day (500 mg tablets three times a day). Actually, it's a good idea even if you aren't on prednisone. Guest guest
If I might add, be sure you have Vitamin D in that Calcium, otherwise it won't absorb. That's why you see milk fortified with Vitamin D. Without it, the calcium doesn't do you you any good. You also get Vitamin D from sunlight. That's great that you have a found a good doc who actually will listen to you and take you seriously. I had that problem with the first rheumy I went to. To make matters worse, that first doc was a woman!!! I think she just hardened to the pain she constantly heard people talk about and she just didn't take anyone too seriously. I love the rheumy I have now, he listens and we work together. Oh, before I forget. Depending on what you need an MRI on, have they considered and Open MRI Unit. Tose don't have as many restrictions as the casket model. I have been to an open MRI on several occasions and I have even been allowed to wear my walking boot. Might be worth looking into!! Take care and good luck with this new rheumy!! Marina in Oh.

Guest guest
I'm getting confused. My rheumy said NOT to get calcium with Vitamin D, and almost all my meds say to stay out of the sun. I just got results of the latest tests and I now have osteoporosis, caused by (maybe) taking low dose Prednesone for 15 years. Which way should it be? Guest guest
Dennis, I'm not sure why your doctor would tell you not to take D with calcium. I don't take it because I go out in the sun every day if only for a few minutes. Many meds make you sun sensitive, but you only need 5-10 minutes of exposure a day and it can be in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is not so hot. Vitamin D deficiency: how much sun is enough? http://aca.ninemsn.com.au/stories/1453.asp a > I'm getting confused. Guest guest
I don't get why your doc would tell you not to take Vit. D. Calcium doesn't do any good without it because it won't absorb. Sorry to hear about your osteoporosis. Bad thing about prednisone is what it does to your bones. I also don't like what it has done to my upper arms by turning them into batwings!!! Not to worry though!! I found the fat it took from my arms!! They relocated it to my waiste and neck!!! You would think that carrying my fridge everywhere with me would be enough of a work out!! (all i wanna do is eat!!!) Take care.......Marina in Ohio > I'm getting confused. My rheumy said NOT to get calcium with Vitamin D, and > almost all my meds say to stay out of the sun. Guest guest
Today I asked my new rheumy about calcium with vitamin D and he said that's what I need. I don't understand the other one saying no, but I'm not going to worry about that now. I still get lots of sun since I live in Texas and have a farm, and am trying to stay active working on my old cars. Most of the time, that's better than watching TV. Guest guest
Well, I'm glad things are worked out about the Vit. D. You're right, that is better than watching TV. Especially since there is never anything on to watch no matter how many channels you have. Take care.......Marina > Today I asked my new rheumy about calcium with vitamin D and he said that's > what I need.
