WOW! First of all, to each of you who replied, a heartfelt thanks

for taking the time to respond. I guess the vote is unanimous-I'll

have to see a rheumatologist!

Unfortuantely, I looked into my insurance plan and there is no rheumy

in this one-horse town I live in. The closest seems to be about 90

miles to the west in Baton Rouge or 50 miles to the north in New

Orleans.

After Hurricane Ivan passes I will try to find one near me. If

anyone lives in the New Orleans or Baton Rouge are and can recommend

a good rheumy, then please let me know. I live about 50 miles

southeast of New Orleans. I don't mind driving that far to see one.

Unless of course, Ivan veers a little more to the west then I may be

swimming with the fishes instead.....

The only tests he ordered were a sed rate and ra factor and a bone

density scan. I was so outdone with his attiude that I cancelled the

bone density scan scheduled for tomorrow. I had to anyway with the

hurricane upon us.

Although my dr. jokingly blamed it on " old age " ,which I know is a

crock, he also thought that stress was causing some of the

symptoms. I'll admit I am under a lot of stress since my husband

was diganosed with ALS in May and my only daughter left for college

up in NY two weeks ago. But, I handle stress very well and it makes

me angry when a dr. brushes off a complaint by a patient and blames

it on stress. Especially since I had symptoms long before my husband

was diagnosed. Does anyone out there find that when they're under a

lot of stress they tend to have a flare-up?

So, I think the first thing I need to do is get another dr. and take

it from there. Any referrals in my area is appreciated. Again, I

thank ALL of you for your input and sensible advice. This site is a

Godsend...

Merci beaucoup!

Hugs, Tee

hi there Tee:

Hope you will be safe from the approaching

hurricane........

Yes, stress has alot to do with flareups in

RA..........I have a stressful job as a legal

assistant for a personal injury atty and I know that

well!!!

My Rheumy has prescribed anti-anxiety drugs for

me.........it helps with me sleeping thru the night

for sure.

Hope you do find a good Rheumy soon.........stress has

been shown to bring out your RA symptoms.......

Hang in there and welcome to the group........they are

a great bunch of people who totally understand what

you are dealing with. It is nice to have a place to

go to when you are hurting and have someone

understand.......

Tee,

Shouldn't you be evacuating?

Stress does make RA symptoms worse. I quit my stressful job and that

has helped a lot. I also got a divorce, and that helped a lot too.

During my previous employment, I had a period where I had issues with

a joint in my jaw. If the day started out stressful, bam it would

swell up and it would be soup for me for lunch. So annoying.

There are lots of doctors, including rheumatologists, that can be

dismissive of your symptoms. That is not good and is a sign that's

not the best doctor. RA can be controlled with medication in most

cases and remaining functional (able to do most of the things you

used to be able to do) is always the goal. RA is a chronic illness

and most of us, even if we are well controlled with medication, have

occasional flare ups and deal with daily fatigue. But getting a good

rheumatologist is one of the most important things you can do. Being

a part of this group and learning as much as you can is equally as

critical.

I wish you all the best with this storm!

Tee, it looks like you won't have to travel too far to a Rheumy, you can

float up there pretty quickly. ;) At least you're on the western side of the

storm, so rising water won't be as much of a problem. I've had the blessing

(?) of riding out a number of hurricanes in the past, living in the

Beaumont, TX area most of my growing years. They can be really frightening

sometimes because it doesn't stop for a L-O-N-G TIME!

I travel about 25 miles one way, that's not as far as you will have to

travel, but if he/she's any good, the trip will be worth it! Go in with a

positive attitude and it should turn out well. As I found out, my GP did a

lot of good for my treatment, the Rheumy just has more experience. Maybe you

can get some satisfaction from your doctor, it's worth a try.

Dennis

Cheer up, it can only get better

Thanks you Pat, Jennie and Dennis for your concern and advice. I am

going to make an appt. with a rheumy in New Orleans asap, realizing

it could take a couple of months to see one. By the way, Ivan passed

to the east of us and some parts of New Orleans were hit with strong

winds and flooding. Luckily, we were not part of it where I live,

but I really feel for the residents of Ala. and Fla. that were hit

hard...
