Windows 7, new webpage in existing window

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 and am having trouble opening a new webpage in existing window. For instance, if I have a webpage open, and go to the address bar and type a NEW address in there and enter, the window opens, but the small circle that indicates it is searching for the new website, just keeps spinning wihtout finding/ opening the new webpage. I have to close the old window, open a new page in Explorer and enter the webaddress, which then works OK. Any suggestion is appreciated. Ron E
