One of my mom's specialist offices doesn't take cash any more.  Checks and credit cards only.  Not for this reason, but because they had a break-in at their office and couldn't prove how much cash they had on hand to submit with their insurance claim (it was hundreds of $).

OTOH, there are offices that take checks and cash only so that they don't have to pay the credit card fees.

We take cash, have never had a problem, but then again I work the front desk half of the time and verify the cash and don't leave more than $50 in there at a time.  The only one skimming is me ;-0

My husband and I determined by reviewing the books and patient accounts that out billing person wasn't " skimming " money but borrowing it, has done so for a while per her admission and we caught her between taking and returning. She has paid back the money and with some mixed feelings, we have not fired her. We have changed how our system works so only we handle the cash and the cash is always locked and the checks are tallied and only we make deposits which adds hardly any extra work - we just hadn't thought it through before. We'll see how it goes.

You have just yourself up to be stolen from again.

" borrowed? "

That means you willingly and knowingly allowed your employee to take the money.

Bad example and bad precedent to set.

Just my two cents.

I have to agree with Steve.

Most employee issues are worth dealing with and keeping the employee on if they

are teachable. BUT I will not keep an employee if they are dishonest or

untrustworthy. This employee " borrowing " from you is dishonest & deceptive. This

speaks directly to the character of that employee.

Your employee knew what she was doing was dishonest. What else is she doing that

is not honoring to you when you aren't looking? Talking bad about you or

complaining about her job? Not treating patients with the kindness they deserve?

Gossiping about coworkers? It's likely she is undermining your whole practice in

ways you haven't even thought of.

We took over an existing practice and I ended up letting two people go as they

were not really on board with our mission of patient-centered care. There were

no big incidents, just subtle ways they dealt with patients in person and on the

phone that was not up to my level of expectations in regards to customer service

and no amount of coaching helped. The only regret I have is that I didn't let

them go sooner as it changed the whole dynamics of the clinic for the better.

I recently read EnteLeadership by Dave Ramsey and highly recommend it. It is a

wealth of info on building a business with the right kind of people.
