Guest guest
To the Editor: Enough already! We have had eight years of a president convinced that he is right and certified from on high.Rather than think, it seems he has governed by his opinions. It surely is not wise to run a country or to lead a life based solely on either/or. It is far wiser to consider both/and. As any sport teaches us, there is always a need for flexibility and response to outer circumstances in order to survive, let alone win. One cannot walk on one leg or only breathe in. Duality is the rule of consciousness itself. One should consider the opposites to find the reconciling third. It takes that wee tab to pull up a zipper. Projecting an 'evil axis' on other countries at the outset was not the best approach for peaceful solutions. It is like the two ends of a shoelace refusing to cross over to the other side of the shoe. They are mad at each other and go up separate sides, and guess what? The shoe falls off! Any kid knows that. So rather than accuse Obama of flip-flopping, we should see that trying to understand where the other side is coming from is a better approach for everyone's security. The obvious truth is that what one person says is not always what the other person hears. One speech to a hundred people yields a hundred different speeches. The reason is that each of us processes the same experience uniquely. I grew up a world traveler and remember my father busy typing a letter in our hotel room. He was interrupted by the bellboy bringing an important message. My father was grateful but busy, so he tossed a tip on the bed for the young man to pick up. As this was in Spain, the young man was insulted and refused the tip! Different cultures, different customs, hence the old saw, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." A presidential candidate - of all people - should retain the privilege of remaining flexible and that goes for all of us. Alice O.
