Guest guest
Hi all, Have any of you been to India fairly recently? We are going next month (first time for both of us) and for the first week I will be alone. I will be in Cochin, which I believe is pretty much “soft India” but would be grateful for any advice nonetheless. Graham will join me there for 2 weeks, after which we will go to Delhi (where he has a meeting, so we should be looked after there) – but I have heard so many horror stories about India that I am trying to collate as much information as possible. Thanks! fa " Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you. " CG Jung
Guest guest
Hello fa,I'll be in India from late January through the second week of March, starting in New Delhi, then Rishikesh (also "soft India"), then Dehradun to work on Ganesh Baba's MS with the people who first introduced me to Baba, then east to Bareilly and Benaras, before heading south to Vizag where I'll volunteer in a school for developmentally delayed people <http://www.lebenshilfeindia.org/> and go to a wedding(!), then spend a week at <http://devipuram.com/>, and another in Bubhaneswar, and finally Calcutta, 6 weeks altogether.Do we cross paths at all?I think the best advice I got about being on India is not to drink any unboiled water except from a sealed bottle (be sure it's not a re-sealed bottle), don't any street food at all or any raw food except what you can peel yourself. We did buy tea from tea wallahs anywhere, including on the train, drink coconut milk from street vendors and buy oranges and bananas. In restaurants, ask if they fry in ghee - any other oil can be a problem. I didn't get sick at all the last time I was there. Also, carry toilet paper or tissues with you. You can buy it on the street but I mostly just take napkins from the restaurants. Beyond that, treat it as an adventure. An amazing number of synchronous events happened to me there, some very powerful. My blog from the last trip begins at <http://evesjourneytomythaca.blogspot.com/2005_01_01_archive.html> and goes through March of 2005.EveHi all, Have any of you been to India fairly recently? Guest guest
Hello Eve, Thanks for replying – I had forgotten about your travels in India! I am hoping to do it very soft, I’m afraid. My flight is Air India which I hope is not too bad (does it serve wine with meals??) and I was planning on a European-style hotel and food. I think I will try to get an all-inclusive hotel for the first week, then when Graham joins me we may be a bit more adventurous, but within certain well-defined parameters. Unfortunately it does not sound as though our paths will cross, as I will not be in Delhi until 25th Feb. We seem destined to be ships which pass in the night! Thank you for the advice. I couldn’t seem to get beyond the first entry in your India blog, probably because I am doing something stupid as usual – any step-by-step for dummies gratefully received!! Did you take malaria pills? fa " Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you.
