Guest guest
It is nice to see that so many places now have blue pins, blue wristbands and car magnets available for prostate cancer awareness month. Just a few years ago, the lapel pins could only be found in a couple of places and if it were not for the tireless and tenacious efforts of Rick Ward this symbol might never have grown as quickly or as fully. For background purposes I thought people might like to know that Lou was one of the very earliest public prostate cancer advocates and her organization, the s Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research started with a green pin. When CapCURE (now the Prostate Cancer Foundation) came into existence and started its work, it soon adopted the blue ribbon. Not long after the formation of the National Prostate Cancer Coalition in 1996, the blue ribbon was officially incorporated into the logo of the NPCC. In the middle of all of this was Rick Ward pounding away at “blue is for boys” and working to get every organization related to prostate cancer to adopt the blue ribbon. In the late 1990s and early 2000, there were a variety of awareness symbols for prostate cancer including the American Cancer Society’s grey pin and Us TOO!’s prostate cancer stamp pin, there was also a grey pin shaped like a tie, golden walnuts (one of my favorites) and the mixed blue/pink ribbon(an extremely popular seller to this day). BTW, the prostate cancer stamp, one that will actually raise money for prostate cancer research is trapped in the postal service’s stamp board awaiting re-issue. The original prostate cancer stamp was simply for awareness and due to poor sales it was pulled from the market. All said and done, it is remarkable that in 2006 we have all gotten behind the blue ribbon as a symbol and this has made the job of raising awareness about prostate cancer much easier. More and more people are associating “blue is for boys”. There are now many places to purchase your awareness products. The NPCC store carries many awareness products and you can access the store at www.fightprostatecancer.org. Our awareness products are used as fundraisers as well as awareness raisers. Rick Ward regularly handles large orders and he has negotiated some great prices from various businesses. You can reach Rick at www.pcaawareness.net and you will need to do it very quickly if you want 1,000 or more as it takes a little time for production and delivery. As stated in another post, Us Too! has pins as does the Prostate Cancer Foundation and even several smaller organizations around the country. Long story short, now is the time to show your commitment to raising awareness and finding a cure for prostate cancer so get to your favorite prostate cancer awareness outlet and show your color. --Skip Skip Lockwood Executive Vice President and COO National Prostate Cancer Coalition 1154 15th St., N.W. If you are in a support group, or just want to help spread the word, one good way to do it is to wear and give out the small Blue Lapel Pins. They only cost about 30 cents apiece. Rick Ward can order them for you. Contact him at his email address just for the pins & things: pcapin@... Or go to www.PCaAwareness.net <http://www.pcaawareness.net/> so you can look over the items. Guest guest
On Wednesday, August 02, 2006 10:33 AM Skip Lockwood posted regarding the awareness activities coming in September. In so doing he set out what he characterized as background information. This information was so filled with inaccuracies as to distort the true historical background. To set the record straight: Skip wrote: "When CapCURE (now the Prostate Cancer Foundation) came into existence and started its work, it soon adopted the blue ribbon." "Not long after the formation of the National Prostate Cancer Coalition in 1996, the blue ribbon was officially incorporated into the logo of the NPCC." 1. CaP CURE was started in 1993 2. CaP Cure didn't "announce" that the blue ribbon was the symbol of PCa until November 1999 3. The original logo of NPCC after it's formation did NOT incorporate a blue ribbon 4. The earliest I found of the blue ribbon in the NPCC logo is in the NPCC's SmartBrief - May 18, 2001 5. The NPCC's SmartBrief - May 15, 2001 had the original NPCC logo: To NPCC's credit, in early 2000 they ordered 14,000 blue ribbon pins from me and have kept a supply of the pins on hand since that time. And the NPCC's SmartBrief -- April 7, 2000 first added the blue ribbon pin image to its masthead. Still, what Skip wrote was misleading in that it credited both CaP CURE and NPCC with much earlier embracing of the blue ribbon as the PCa symbol and made a shambles of the true history of our symbol. These distortions are more troubling when you consider that NPCC is one of the oldest PCa organizations and is looked to as an authority on PCa matters. NPCC's credibility is called into question by such manipulation of the real history of the blue ribbon, and that can extend to lack of faith in the credibility of other things that NPCC may say. Guest guest
Rick and all This one has got through, but I don't think the last part is right for the group. People are correct in putting right misconceptions. Please try to do this without attacking an organisation or a person. The group ethic requires kindness. Guest guest
All, The purpose of my email was to give general background information and not to provide the definitive history of the pin. You will note that words like “soon” and “not long” are used as opposed to “immediately” or “on March 14, 1996”. My apologies if any of you felt somehow mislead. I am more than happy for you all to have a look at the NPCC annual report which provides quite a detailed history of the awareness activities of the National Prostate Cancer Coalition. The bottom line remains the same, the blue ribbon IS the symbol of prostate cancer awareness and there are many places that you can purchase lapel pins, car magnets, wristbands and other awareness items. Moreover, the general public is quickly adopting and using this symbol and that is a victory for the entire movement. Whether you see the symbol at a major league baseball game, at local hospital screening or as part of retail activities there is a clear acceptance of “our” symbol. --Skip Skip Lockwood Executive Vice President and COO National Prostate Cancer Coalition 1154 15th St., N.W.
