Hello everyone this is a good question.. will be having this test June

9th to decided if and when he will have his tethered cord released. We finally

went to the doctor May 2nd and he said yes does have a t.c with a mass but

the mass does not seem to cause a problem plus his C1 is malformed and not

together right but said he would not touch this if he shows no problems with his

head or neck.. He also has slight scoliosis and clipping the T.C could stop it

from getting any worse is this true?? I am still pretty new to this and the

doctor said he thinks the T.C is why my son is so short in his lower body and

this is what is causing all is constipation and will cause him more issues in

the long run with that and his bladder. The Nero surgeon said my son does not

have spina bifida but his Nero doctor said he does so I am considering getting

another opinion for that.. This is all so confusing and scary. The way it

sounds 's T.C is not as involved as some

of the others the doctor has seen and he said the surgery is not a real big

deal ( I wonder about this ) I would think anytime they open the back up it's a

big deal.. has never had this test done what should I expect?? Is this

test anything like the VCUG?? He has had this done but not the urodynamics...

also has narrowing in his spine and the doctor said it most likely has

been there since birth so all they can do for that is watch it for now.. His

tethered cord is at L3/L4 and his spinal cord is lower then usual.. Any

suggestion?? Thanks to all of you out here.

God Bless, mom to T.C not corrected at this point..

I am new to this group and saw Beth's post and I hope this answers her questions

about whether a Urodynamics test will show if you need surgery or not for

tethered cord. I had a CINE MRI that found I had Chiari 1 Malformation etc.and

a CINE MRI is the diagnostic one that can show if you need surgery and it can

also find out what you have too.I have had Urodynamics tests and my doctors did

that test for me to find out whats going on with the bladder. I have Chiari 1

Malformation, scoliosis in lumbar and thoracic, tethered cord at T-3/4, spinal

arachnoid cyst at T-3/4, and L-5/S-1 Herniations,nerve root compression,w/

annular tear with disc material spilling out and I have had MRI's and CINE MRI's

to show what I had and The CINE MRI is how they found out I needed surgery on my

chiari, If your doctors are only going by a urodynamics test, they also need to

have you do a CINE MRI is what they also need to do because that will tell for

sure. If any of you would like to email

me,feel free.

In the most basic of definition (which is all I can really explain honestly) it

determines if your bladder is affected by nerve damage and how it is affected.

what exactly does this test determine?

Thanks for the info. I dont believe I have ever had that test before--actually,

I didnt even realize that TC was part of my diagnosis until I went to TCI for

decompression surgery for ACM and instead got tethered cord release/laminectomy.

I'm still unsure of what all that even means. I had studied what I thought to be

EVERYTHING about ACM that I could in two years and was as ready as I could be

for them to open up the back of my head! When the nsg opted for this, a less

effasive surgery (but still with risks and a serious surgery of course) I opted

for it!

But I do have to tell you all how very weird it was not knowing what exactly

they were doing, (even though they explained everything) and not knowing what to

expect during recovery. I am still recovering at 9 weeks post op and some things

are better---the horrible pains down my legs are gone, no more numbness in my

feet (horah!!), my hips feel great and thats from a mother of 3 and now a

grandma----my lower back is coming along---not in near as much pain as I used to

have but I do have to baby it ---not over do. I was discouraged when my menstral

cycle came and my headaches were horrible (as usual)---but I was told that it

could take some time for everything to heal if it is going to so I need to be

patient.

My new pain management doc is wiening me off morphine---been on it for 2 yrs

now---I want to see where I am at and that is hard to do on meds. I know it is

kindy risky at this point but that little voice keeps telling me so I'm just

going to listen and do it---whats the worse thing that could happen? I go back

on because I cant stand the pain?

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself (Sally), I live in Washington State

near Mt. St. Helens (the volcano) --and thank you for letting me hang out with

you all!

A Urodynamics Test should not be the only deciding factor in whether or not

a Detethering is needed. Symptoms should be factored in as well. I just hope

you realize that just because the results of a Urodynamics Test may not show

any problems in that specific area, that doesn't mean Surgery isn't needed.

Yes, a Tethered Cord Release may help Scoliosis if the Scoliosis is caused

by the Tethered Cord.

Hope that made sense. Just some personal advice from what I have discovered,

if you will, along the way.

Good luck with everything.
