Guest guest
Hi Betty and anyone else interested, Sorry for the delay, I’ve been busy, but now will continue. So we went to the rally. We still had to stand in a long line, but my VIP tickets got us whizzed through security and into the actual arena, and we heard Bill Clinton and Barack Obama give excellent speeches. I felt bad afterwards because my new friend had another 2 hour drive after dropping me off, and I was rattling around in a 7 bedroom house in a gated community on billionaires row, but it wasn’t my house and I couldn’t invite him to stay. I did another 2 long days in the office, then all able bodied people hit the streets. I wore my loose jeans, comfortable shoes and campaign T-shirt and they said I looked like the archetypal (their word not mine!) college kid from Boston. I had to do a lot of deep-breathing before I knocked on the first door, but I was lucky – they were home, all registered Democrats who had already voted, and they high-fived me for what I was doing. So that gave me confidence. The interesting thing was that Americans are so much more open than Brits. Like, sometimes I knocked on a Republican door and they were like “Well, I don’t agree with your choice for President, Miss, but good on you for doing something for what you believe in”. One even told me that he had a son about my age who was still in bed (in the middle of the afternoon). When Obama was declared, I just went wild and so did my sister-in-law, who came screaming down the telephone from England, and we were both jumping up and down shouting YES WE CAN! It was a bummer returning to England where no-one is positive about anything, but I was impressed by Obama’s measured and thoughtful acceptance speech (he reminded me of Churchill in WW2, actually) and also McCain’s graciousness in defeat. Needed to be de-programmed when I returned to England, more anon! fa " Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you. " CG Jung
