Guest guest
For those who use Windows, there is (or was) a file at C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS.SAM Rename it to HOSTS (or copy it to HOSTS) If you edit the file using a text editor such as Notepad, and add the sites that you go to most often to the file, then you will be able to get there when your ISP'S DNS is not working. How do you find the numbers? Simple...get to a command prompt and type ping and the site name. The system will give you some numbers. Below are two that I put in my file today after I could not get to DiabetesWebSite. 209.157.121.200 www.diabeteswebsite.com 165.227.141.150 www.mendosa.com Another trick that I did is to find out our DNS numbers for work, and have them listed as a backup, since my ISP (Road Runner) always seems to have DNS problems. -------------------- Bill Eastman Home: beastman@... http://home.austin.rr.com/beastman ICQ 25657478
Guest guest
Hi Bill, Very interesting. I didn't even know my own numbers! But since you mentioned ping, I thought I would try it with the ping program I use, NeoTrace. Gives the same results. Thanks. Rick Mendosa: A Writer on the Web: www.mendosa.com E-mail: mendosa@... Guest guest
Hi Rick, You're free to try to make it so those that aren't computer tech people can understand it and have an article. The only thing wrong with that method is I KNOW IP 6 is coming soon (instead of four sets of numbers such as 165.227.141.150 there will be six sets of numbers such as 165.227.141.150.0.0 but I don't know where the other two digits will be added) Using the DNS server from work is a better solution. I'm going to run a caching DNS server under Linux. Re: DNS PROBLEMS Hi Bill, Very interesting. I didn't even know my own numbers!
