Guest guest
Hello, Deb. the sugar count is usually included in the total carb count. they list the sugar separately to let people know there is sugar in the food-and therefore it will affect your glucose level more quickly than some of the other carbs will. yes there are a couple of different meters that talk. the one that most of us use is called the Accucheck voice mate. It is easy to use and uses the least amount of blood. all the meters have differing problems. The address for the Accu-check is: www.accu-check.com. Re: hi all question about food Good morning everybody. I have two questions. First of all are there different types of talking glucometers and which one is the best to get? Secondly, you have been talking about carbs a lot, but also on packages there is the sugar content such as 7 grams, etc. Should I be counting those as well? Thanks. Guest guest
the sugar is contained in the total carb grams it is only listed separately as a nice thing to do. The acucheck voicemate is really good from what I gather but I don't use that one. It tests plasma in the blood rather than whole blood like older blood monitors. What that means in plain English is it tests blood sugar in the blood *exactly* how your local lab would where as older blood monitors don't do it that way so from a clinical point, it is a good meter. regards, Re: hi all question about food > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello Shane, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I m sure will be able to be far more specific in > helping > > > you > > > > > > here, > > > > > > > > but an idea my mom learned in the hospital was to have an open > > > face > > > > > > > > sandwich with peanut butter and cream cheese and a strawberry > on > > > top > > > > > for > > > > > > a > > > > > > > > little extra flavor and in her case > > > > > > > > eye appeal. Guest guest
1 biscuit = 20 to 30 grams two pieces of bacon = 0 grams a cup of 1% milk = 11 grams total: about 30 to 40 grams for breakfast not bad. You have to break that high sugar by skipping a meal and drinking water and once he is down then let him eat. He can help bring down the bgs by drinking water, slight exercise, and not eating carbs. Once his bgs is below 140 then let him eat 45 grams per meal. regards, Re: hi all question about food > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello Shane, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I m sure will be able to be far more specific in > > helping > > > > you > > > > > > > here, > > > > > > > > > but an idea my mom learned in the hospital was to have an > open > > > > face > > > > > > > > > sandwich with peanut butter and cream cheese and a > strawberry > > on > > > > top > > > > > > for > > > > > > > a > > > > > > > > > little extra flavor and in her case > > > > > > > > > eye appeal. Guest guest
BTW milk is often times avoided by low to moderate carbers since it can spike blood sugar quickly. It contains lactose, a natural sugar that quickly elevates some diabetics sugar. Anything ending in ose is a sugar. We get calcium from cheese. Not saying you have to pitch drinking milk but if you find that his bgs is high before lunch, it is probably from the biscuit combined with the lactose/sugar in the milk a very potent combination of carbs. A better choice might be a low calorie bread with butter/splenda/cinnimon on it, that having only like 8 carbs as compared to the 25 in the biscuit, the bacon, and the milk. This way, he only eats 20 carbs rather than 30 to 40. If he doesn't like eggs, you can certainly get very creative with any type of meat for a breakfast sandwich. regards, Re: hi all question about food > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello Shane, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I m sure will be able to be far more specific in > > helping > > > > you > > > > > > > here, > > > > > > > > > but an idea my mom learned in the hospital was to have an > open > > > > face > > > > > > > > > sandwich with peanut butter and cream cheese and a > strawberry > > on > > > > top > > > > > > for > > > > > > > a > > > > > > > > > little extra flavor and in her case > > > > > > > > > eye appeal. Guest guest
well, taking a walk up/down your steps 15 times in a row is good exercise and is easy for most to do. Also, you can stand in place and hold the wall and jog in place for 1 minute. Although that seems like very little, it is enough to get the heart pumping. regards, Re: hi all question about food > Well I doubled the size of my spinach salad which I have three times a week > and drank n extra cup of coffee. Guest guest
Okay Just8in. Thanks. Today, the doctor increased the Metformin to twice a day and put him on lipitor for cholesterol. Guest guest
I believe MediCal will cover the cost of the talking glucose meter recommended below. All you need do is have your doctor write a prescription for the meter and the testing strips for the meter. Then make the request of your insurance company to purchase it for you. I don't believe they will cover the cost of the meter without a doctor's prescription. With the prescription there are some companies that will bill the insurance company directly. You might check to see if the supplier of the meter will bill the insurance company directly with a doctor's prescription from you. Guest guest
Harry is correct only if the doctor orders it as a necessary prescription. Some insurance companies will not purchase a new blood meter for 3 years or more between new meter purchases. Guest guest
chances are, when he gets his sugar under control, and lowers his carbs, he will not need the lipitor but time will tell. I take lipitor twice a week mon/thurs just for keeping my LDL down in general since it is the stroke causer in long term diabetics and I'm certainly long term 26 years *smile* Re: hi all question about food > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello Shane, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I m sure will be able to be far more specific in > > > > helping > > > > > > you > > > > > > > > > here, > > > > > > > > > > > but an idea my mom learned in the hospital was to have > an > > > open > > > > > > face > > > > > > > > > > > sandwich with peanut butter and cream cheese and a > > > strawberry > > > > on > > > > > > top > > > > > > > > for > > > > > > > > > a > > > > > > > > > > > little extra flavor and in her case > > > > > > > > > > > eye appeal. Guest guest
BTW Deb when you get a talking meter for your husband start posting your stats to the list like Harry does. He designed that posting format since he has clinical skills *smile* he use to be a clinical psychologist back in the day. Hope you don't mind me mentioning that Harry I just think that is neat. So look at how he posts his readings and meals to the list. By us looking at his daily reports, we helped him adjust his carb grams and insulin so he is now regulated. Take a peek at any subject that states advice for harry since it will mostly be his daily blood sugar reports. H is for humalog insulin, G is for blood sugar, glucose, reading, and C is for carb grams. I.E pre breakfast G 98 C 15 H 8 2 hour post test G 103 pre-lunch g 89 C 15 H 9 2 hour post test G 89 and so on Re: hi all question about food > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello Shane, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I m sure will be able to be far more specific in > > > > helping > > > > > > you > > > > > > > > > here, > > > > > > > > > > > but an idea my mom learned in the hospital was to have > an > > > open > > > > > > face > > > > > > > > > > > sandwich with peanut butter and cream cheese and a > > > strawberry > > > > on > > > > > > top > > > > > > > > for > > > > > > > > > a > > > > > > > > > > > little extra flavor and in her case > > > > > > > > > > > eye appeal. Guest guest
BTW how often is he taking lipitor? What was his LDL level? Guest guest
also, Deb the doctor should say on the prescription that your husband is blind. I know of clients who were refused the talking glucose meter until the doctor said they were blind! Bureaucracy rules supreme! Guest guest
yes, shane, Medi Cal will cover the talking glucose meter, but the doctor has to be very specific about your being blind-and medi Cal takes much longer for approval than other insurance companies. Hopefully the new CA govenor will not cut Medi Cal so much that it will not cover this type of expense. Guest guest
thanks for explaing this to me. I will start posting. My husband disagrees with me about this, but I want him to see an endocrin doctor. This M.D. told him that he only has to test his sugar once a day in the morning before breakfast. I very strongly disagree with this. He says that because now, his sugars aren't dangerously high. He had a reading yesterday of 231 and 258. Guest guest
What is your husband's name? So far he has a blood glucose level reading well over 100 points above the good reading, which means so far his levels are not good at all. Guest guest
the lipitor will certainly help but once he gets his sugars under control, you will probably want to bump that down to 2 to 3 times a week instead. In fact, he may not even need it at all. The best way to determine this is his 3 month blood work. I.E once his sugars are under control, you can experiment some and cut back the lipitor to 3 times a week and then get his blood work done in 2 months and see what his LDL is etc. Most of us on here do our fair share of adjusting our own meds and some aren't comfortable with that, and that is fine, but really we cut them back never increase them and use our own lab work to check the results etc. regards, Re: hi all question about > > food > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello Shane, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I m sure will be able to be far more specific > > in > > > > > > helping > > > > > > > > you > > > > > > > > > > > here, > > > > > > > > > > > > > but an idea my mom learned in the hospital was to > have > > > an > > > > > open > > > > > > > > face > > > > > > > > > > > > > sandwich with peanut butter and cream cheese and a > > > > > strawberry > > > > > > on > > > > > > > > top > > > > > > > > > > for > > > > > > > > > > > a > > > > > > > > > > > > > little extra flavor and in her case > > > > > > > > > > > > > eye appeal. Guest guest
BTW Deb I'm just curious, I know you are quite excited to learn how to become in control of diabetes but am wondering if Terri is as excited about it? Does he want to commit to getting it under control? Just curious since we have not heard from him and am wondering what his level of determination might be to get regulated. That really is going to determine how successful this adventure will be for all involved *smile*. regards, Re: hi all question about food > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello Shane, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I m sure will be able to be far more specific in > > > > helping > > > > > > you > > > > > > > > > here, > > > > > > > > > > > but an idea my mom learned in the hospital was to have > an > > > open > > > > > > face > > > > > > > > > > > sandwich with peanut butter and cream cheese and a > > > strawberry > > > > on > > > > > > top > > > > > > > > for > > > > > > > > > a > > > > > > > > > > > little extra flavor and in her case > > > > > > > > > > > eye appeal. Guest guest
Deb, Those blood sugars when running consistantly cause all kind of problems including kidney disfunction and heart disease. this is especially trueif he is already had to be put on lipatur. Guest guest
, you won't hear from him because he doesn't like computers. LOL. He is very cranky and depressed right now, but I think he is going to be okay. I can't say for sure what he does at work, however, I have been packing his lunch and from his mood lately, I doubt he has been cheating. LOL. Guest guest
Oh yeah!, I am familiar with that crankiness and depression. He is suffering from withdrawal. Like an alcoholic a person who has been high carbing for a long time is a carboholic. When his body gets adjusted to using a lower amount of carbs per day, he will feel much better. In fact he will have more energy and feel very good on a low carb intake. It can take any where from a few days to three weeks or so to get use to the lower amount of carbs per day. I started feeling much better in less than a week, and I still feel much better today. So give him time, and he will feel even better. Tell Terry we are pulling for him, and I know he is going to get much better.
