Guest guest
Dave,I just write a prescription for "Oral typhoid vaccine, 1 capsule every other day x 4 doses, Disp #4" and have the patient get it at the pharmacy. Just make sure they don't take any antibiotics at the same time. SetoSouth Pasadena, CA I do not do much travel medicine other than reviewing CDC guidelines for patients. However I have a patient that needs oral typhoid. Can I just send a prescription for the pharmacy for that with the instructions for the vaccine manufacturers or do I have to order those pills do the actual vaccine manufacturer like injectables? Any input is most appreciated, thanks, Dave

Guest guest
You can do either. Marty mentioned to me I could order the capsules. I have so many different vaccines that I chose just to Rx to pharmacy. Most insurances don't cover travel medicine. But interestingly, I have see patients' insurances not cover Vivotif, patient come back for the injection, their insurance cover the majority of the cost, only a $5 copay. Patients like that! Guest guest
Have seen the cost as low as around $50 at Costco Pharmacy. I tell patients the oral vaccine has 3 advantages over the injection... ....not a shot ....costs less ....good for 5 years vs. 2 years They almost always choose the oral but better to go with the injection if within 2 weeks of departure.
