I don't drink milk, get my calcium from cheese smile. I would never try low carb

milk since I would bet it would be nasty smile. Thanks for letting me know not

to try it though.

Regards,

Hoods' Low-Carb Milk

Has anyone tried the new low-carb milk from Hoods? Well, I did this past week

but was very disappointed in it. It may be low in carbs but it's also low in

taste, kind of bitter but the milk is not spoiled, just doesn't taste right. Has

anyone else had this experience?

Thanks,

aren't saying how long ago that was!)

BTW speaking of low carb, pepsi just came out with a new line of pop called

" Pepsi edge " . It is not for us, but rather for non-diabetics. The marketing

blast is 50% less sugar. For 1 12 ounce can has 20 grams of carbs as compared to

the 40 grams in the non-edge/regular.

Buddy I work with came in with it today and he knows I moderate carb and told me

about it.

Hey, moderate/low carb is causing companies to accomidate that portion of

society and we are in there! smile. so, we might just get some good low carb

stuff us diabetics can eat that is good tasting.

what about soy milk? I stopped drinking milk a year ago cause it was messing

with my allergies. but I love the stuff. when I was in school, I drank about

one gallon of milk per day for twelve years. now I hear it is all most four

dollars per gallon. butter milk is even better, but the carbs in butter milk

is scary. probably shouldn't be eating cereal at all any way and can't eat

cookies any more and can't eat a apple pie or peach carbler, so what good is

milk any more?

I heard on the news yesterday, that lots of folks are having to go to the

hospital cause they aren't eating enough carbs per day. they were really

down on the Atkins diet. they were saying how bad it is to cut out carbs and

you shouldn't be listening to all the non sense about cutting carbs to loose

weight. sounds to me, like maybe these people had cut out all there carbs

per day and not eating any at all. this would for sure probably make you

sick if you didn't eat any carbs a day at all. some folks just don't use

there heads and a good way of eating and staying healthy, gets a bad rap.

Atkins never said in his book to cut out all carbs. but his diet is sure

getting kicked around here lately for putting people in the hospital. some

times I think the fast food industry is the ones be hind all the bad talk

about low carbs. they will loose a lot of money if folks believe in eating

less carbs to get healthy. just my opinion for what ever it is worth.

Yes I think some people are going overboard with the low-carb craze. We need

some carbs, just as we need some protein, some fat, etc., but it's being

realistic about it. It's too easy to get so preoccupied with cutting out carbs

that you don't wind up enjoying anything you eat or drink at all, and what good

is that? Hey, I enjoy an occasional peach cobbler, but I don't eat 'em every

day, and I eat it early enough in the day that I can walk to burn up some of

those carbs. I know ultimately I'm going to pay for what I eat so I keep that in

mind and enjoy my food, I just don't eat foolishly beyond my limits though. Just

like you don't live beyond your monetary means, I live according to what I can

reasonably afford to " pay for. " I'm so mad at the food industry for doing

overkill on this low-carb stuff. Half the things that are out there most surely

will be gone in a couple of years because people will burn out on it trying to

convert to it overnight or living on it in excess, or thinking that this is the

panacea to all their medical problems. Therein, they will be in for some

disappointment because like so many things, a lot of the " low carb " things are

probably wind up not being as low-carb as first thought, and to the other

extreme, people will go so low-carb that they will cause themselves damage to

the heart or other organs. A little common sense here goes a low way, but I'm

afraid in all the low-carb frenzy that's all the rage, good ol' common sense has

gone the way of the hair I used to have......

I am going to try something, I think I will add some non diary coffee

Cy,

You bring up an excellent point about products not being what they are touted to

be. It is for this reason that when I look for things in the store, I really

don't look as much for the carb measurement as I do sodium intake and gauge the

product's worth on that more than the carbs. For example, I was looking at salad

dressing tonight. Most are between 0 and 14 gm that I have seen, but when you

look at fat content they can range from about 2 to 15 gm. But ah, look at

sodium. I saw a range of 210 to 380 mg. The low-fat and low-carb dressings

actually had more sodium than the plain old regular dressings. Do I want more

salt? No. Do I want more fat? No. If all I'm getting is a product that has

traded off carbs but gives me more salt, it's of no use to me since I need to

keep sodium down to control blood pressure. ly, with the shotty way carbs

are being measured these days, and since it's such a buzzword that is not always

interpreted correctly, I have to use sodium as a better and more consistent

yardstick. And it has worked for me going that route as my blood sugars are in

better control. Yes I look at carbs and I try to think in terms of carbs, but I

need a meter I can rely on through all the marketing blitzes, and for me

thinking of the salt intake is a workable yardstick. I'd rather eat something

whose ingredients are straightforward, not playing any silly marketing games

with me, rather than chance eating something that I _thought_ was good only to

find out later I've been duped all the while wondering why I had gained 10

pounds.....know what I mean?

I'm glad that is working for you Bill but I do not share the concern of salt. It

doesn't effect me, nor does fat. So, each person is different/is at different

stages in the disease. Bottom line, like I told Cy, you just have to look at

total carbs per serving to get an accurate carb count it really is that

simple... ignore any net carb talk. We all know that carbs do break down to

sugar and it is extremely important to watch them as a diabetic. I have

extremely accurate carb and insulin coverage via reading labels on foods. If the

bread says 15 grams per slice, and I dose 2 H to cover it, I am fine. It works

fine.

Your LDL, HDL, and triglisterites are great measurements to determine if you

should watch fat, especially the LDL. If you are abel to eat moderate amounts of

fat, which we all need, and your LDL is under 100, then it is perfectly fine to

eat some fat. Another thought is, if you are limiting carbs to 15 to 30 grams

per meal, how much fat and salt could you really be eating?

I think we start seeing problems when people get excessive with eating and not

watching portions. Like some have brought up, moderate/low carbing is fine as

long as you do portion control as well. I know for me, I eat 15 grams for

breakfast, 30 for lunch, and 60 for dinner and my a1c is 5.3 and all other

readings (cholesterol and blood pressure) are fine. It is only when I start

getting excessive and eating 80 grams per meal that my lab/blood results go off

the board smile.

Just some thoughts that came to mind while reading over your post so thought I'd

share...

Regards,
