Guest guest
, , . I will not tell Crystal that you consume 60 grams of carbs for dinner or she will want to try it on a regular basis. (smile) I have her convinced that a 30 gram limit applies. It is working for her as she had an 86 this morning and a 105 two hour lunch post. Tomorrow she will get a 1C and the truth will come out... Cy, the Ancient One... We are gaining on it!!! Re: Hoods' Low-Carb Milk I'm glad that is working for you Bill but I do not share the concern of salt. It doesn't effect me, nor does fat. So, each person is different/is at different stages in the disease. Bottom line, like I told Cy, you just have to look at total carbs per serving to get an accurate carb count it really is that simple... ignore any net carb talk. We all know that carbs do break down to sugar and it is extremely important to watch them as a diabetic. I have extremely accurate carb and insulin coverage via reading labels on foods. If the bread says 15 grams per slice, and I dose 2 H to cover it, I am fine. It works fine. Your LDL, HDL, and triglisterites are great measurements to determine if you should watch fat, especially the LDL. If you are abel to eat moderate amounts of fat, which we all need, and your LDL is under 100, then it is perfectly fine to eat some fat. Another thought is, if you are limiting carbs to 15 to 30 grams per meal, how much fat and salt could you really be eating? I think we start seeing problems when people get excessive with eating and not watching portions. Like some have brought up, moderate/low carbing is fine as long as you do portion control as well. I know for me, I eat 15 grams for breakfast, 30 for lunch, and 60 for dinner and my a1c is 5.3 and all other readings (cholesterol and blood pressure) are fine. It is only when I start getting excessive and eating 80 grams per meal that my lab/blood results go off the board smile. Just some thoughts that came to mind while reading over your post so thought I'd share... Regards, Re: Hoods' Low-Carb Milk Cy, You bring up an excellent point about products not being what they are touted to be. It is for this reason that when I look for things in the store, I really don't look as much for the carb measurement as I do sodium intake and gauge the product's worth on that more than the carbs. For example, I was looking at salad dressing tonight. Most are between 0 and 14 gm that I have seen, but when you look at fat content they can range from about 2 to 15 gm. But ah, look at sodium. I saw a range of 210 to 380 mg. The low-fat and low-carb dressings actually had more sodium than the plain old regular dressings. Do I want more salt? No. Do I want more fat? No. If all I'm getting is a product that has traded off carbs but gives me more salt, it's of no use to me since I need to keep sodium down to control blood pressure. ly, with the shotty way carbs are being measured these days, and since it's such a buzzword that is not always interpreted correctly, I have to use sodium as a better and more consistent yardstick. And it has worked for me going that route as my blood sugars are in better control. Yes I look at carbs and I try to think in terms of carbs, but I need a meter I can rely on through all the marketing blitzes, and for me thinking of the salt intake is a workable yardstick. I'd rather eat something whose ingredients are straightforward, not playing any silly marketing games with me, rather than chance eating something that I _thought_ was good only to find out later I've been duped all the while wondering why I had gained 10 pounds.....know what I mean? Guest guest
How about some good low carb chocolate? Crystal found some at (where else) Wal-Mart and it does have a decent taste. Would make some good ice cream. If we use splenda, cut the diary down some and substitute non diary creamer and water, use low carb or no carb chocolate it could even be nearly legal.. If we also have some low carb stew the meal will be just right for all. Cy, the Ancient One.... Guest guest
Bill, Just use the total carbs and you will do alright. Yes, sodium can be an important item to those who have either blood pressure or water retention issues. I do need to watch the salt intake as well. Poor Crystal needs to also watch both carb and sodium intake. has a good point in that, if your carb intake is limited how much sodium can you ingest. Well, with some of the " low fat " foods you had better really watch it because they use sodium to hide the fact that the product has no taste otherwise. The low carb products seem to be loaded with fat in a lot of cases. You are correct, stick with the old fashioned items because they seem to be a lot more straight forward in their contents. Guest guest
Okay Pat, Where do I get the low carb Butterfingers? What we need is a carb extractor. You know, like the juice extractor except that it removed the carbs from things. Cy, the Ancient One... Re: Hoods' Low-Carb Milk now now Pat always trying to make people take things to far. Guest guest
there is no way a type 2 diabetic could eat 60 grams of carbs at each meal IMO. yes, 15 to 30 grams per meal to get that 80 pre meal and 2 hour post meal of 120 or less. I am right with you on that one. Good work! Bare in mind, I am type 1 diabetic and dose Humalog to cover carbs. Guest guest
actually, they do have a pill out that diabetics can take that binds carbohydrates and prevents your system from digesting them and you pass them as gas. I know, sounds sick, and you would be passing gas like a crazy fool all the time but I recall an endo trying to get me to try it to get me tighter blood sugar control about 5 years ago. I said no thank you smile. Then I learned to carb count and run an a1c of 5.3 without the gas smile.
