When I had my colonoscopy, they had me drink a gallon of " Golytely " . I

honestly believe that stuff should be outlawed! LOL! The test itself was a

piece of cake, and didn't bother me a bit. But, drinking that stuff was

horrible!

I got the stuff called " GoLytely " at the Pharmacy and opted for the

unflavored. I didn't think it was all that bad. I think it took about an

hour to work and it wasn't so bad. I did get a little sore from wiping

though. It's way different to have induced diarrhea than having it when you

are sick. Just my opinion.

Dan,

That's awful you had to go through all of that with the GoLytely!! Compared

to drinking contrast it wasn't as bad I thought. Did you have the plain or a

flavored variety of GoLytely?

Also, while we're discussing such things, I posted a question about light

yellowish stools. Have you ever had that? It would sound like bile must be

getting loose but my urine is normal. I suppose I should call my doc.

Anyway, thanks for writing :)

Dianne A,

Only here can we share such details. : )

Last time I went in for my pre-colonoscopy appt. the nurse was very

sympathetic. She said that no matter what they do, the stuff is *always*

terrible!

The two bottles of stuff that I drink are small, and easy to take. The

Cholyte, (I think a standard name for the " GoLytely " ) made me throw up

continually. Needless to say, since it went up instead of down, I had to

have an alternate method.

Hi everybody - been reading your comments about prep for colonoscopy. Having

had a screening colonoscopy (my mom had colon cancer) last June, I can truly

say that the prep was far worse than the test itself or it's aftermath. I

truly felt guilty that as a nurse I encouraged so many people to " drink it,

it's not that bad " . Paybacks truly are a you know what! I have new found

empathy for the pre-colonoscopy patient, that is for sure. Best of luck to

those of you going for one soon. My husband, who has yet to show any

symptoms of UC to go along with his PSC, has to have one soon. I hope he

tolerates that prep better than I did! Liz

Dianne,

I had the plain kind. I'm not absolutely sure it is the same thing. It got

thicker the longer it took to drink. As for the yellow stools, I've had

them in the past, but associated it with UC.

Thanks, Dan,

I'm supposed to take " Go Lightly " , is that the cholyte stuff? Things did go

rather well for the last colonsocopy; however, I felt that " Go Lightly " should

have been renamed to " Go Constantly " ....not much fun.

Diane,

I have light colored stools when I have a flare -up (lose energy, hard time

concentrating)...my urine color does not always correlate with the stool color.

Dan & group:

Have you all heard of NuLytely prep for colonoscopy ? This was prescribed for

me this time and I just picked it up at the pharmacy...4 liters to be downed in

a couple of hours for my colonoscopy on Friday ! Ugh ! Used the prep you

describe here the first time(Fleets Phospho-soda etc) and I know that is what

my GI usually uses and has prescribed for everyone else having the procedure

this week. I think this new thing might be kind of a trial as he knows I

don't mind being a guinea pig if it's not too risky. He also knows I'll give

him a detailed report afterwards. We'll see....

-

How are you doing ? You have a colonoscopy upcoming too? Too bad we couldn't

car pool for some of this stuff.(the NH/Boston PSC shuttle...Hope you don't mind

my stupid jokes!)

I think of you often, especially when I drive through Manchester or light a

candle. Take good care of yourself.

Dan-

You may be right, but I think " good " might be a little strong for the

Phospho-soda thing. It tasted like detergent and I was so thirsty, I would have

done just about anything for a drink of water by the morning of my procedure.

This prep(NuLytely) allows 8 oz of water up to an hour before the procedure, so

that and my curiosity is keeping me open to giving it a try. My guess is this

one may not taste much better, and 4 liters is a lot to put away. Will " share "

my experience when it's complete. I'd really like to try the pineapple one

that Marsha had...probably not available here in New England....Where else but

California would they make a " tropical fruit " colonoscopy prep?! And where

else, but in this group would I ramble on about such things. Thanks for

everything.

GOOD QUESTION! I've been reading all these and saying nothing but for

(9) He just had to take a laxative two nights before and the night before

and had to take in just clear liquids for the 24 hours prior to his

colonoscopy. Then the a.m. of his procedure, the nurse gave him an enema.

(He HATED that more than anything)

I've heard of the horrible drink that others have had to drink and was very

relieved that didn't have to do that. Maybe it's just different for

children.

For some reason I chose GoLytely. I take it that it (NuLytely) is commonly

Well I have news for them, I will do just about anything they ask, except

drink that stuff again. ( I guess maybe it's like having a baby, you forget

how awful it is til you do it again LOL) I don't know why it would be

different for a child.

I think I had the Lemon-Lime flavoring in mine. It made me so nauseated

though, that I was getting shots of Phenergan in my IV along with it. I

definately feel for those of you that have UC and have to have this done

several times. Hopefully I will never have UC.

I had mine cold..then it got warm from setting...and neither way was any

better. Pinch your nose, hold your head back...and pour it down is about the

best way that I found.... that is, if it can get past the gag reflex.

Would it do any good to make sure all of these liquids are really cold when you

drink them? Sometimes things taste better when cold.

Flip out all you want! This might be the only place where you can feel the

freedom to do this!

Re: Colonoscopy Prep

Hi everyone,

I want to apologize for " flipping out " This is all new to me. It

seems that

most of you here have been dealing with, blood levels and

colonoscopies and

all of the " wonderful " things assoicated with PSC for quite

sometime. I will

try to " take it easy " while I learn and live with this disease.

Thanks for

all of your support. And as for the Fleets Phospho soda, are they

sure they

wern't trying to clean out the top half. Thats stuff really make me

sick. Why

couldn't you just go without eating for a day or so and take

laxitives and

enemas??

I've tried the Cherry and unflavored and recommend the

unflavored. Both have an unpleasant aftertaste, but at least the

unflavored doesn't have a artificial flavor on top of it.

Rinsing after each glass (or series of glasses) helped. The

directions recommend allowing it to chill before using, but that

doesn't make it palatable.

This year, since no evidence of UC was observed during last

year's colonoscopy, I'm doing a Hemoccult II Test Kit (tests for

blood in a series of stool smears) instead. Not as thorough, but

much less invasive and easier prep.

Dear Group,

While my lovely stay in the hospital...I had a colonoscopy done and the

prep I have to say was the best I've had in 12 of the times I've had to drink

the prep. They gave my 2 Dulcolax the day before, a clear liquid diet, and

then I had to drink two 8 eight ounce glasses of Fleet's Phosphasoda (sp?)

and that was it. The Fleet's tasted just like Nulytely, but was much better

than drinking the big gallon!!

Ok, I'm really going to bed now!!haha!

Love you all,

Jacquelyn

P.S. Try holding your nose while you drink and then before you breathe chase

it with a soda (Coke or Sprite)....that seems to help, except it makes me not

want to look at a Coke for weeks after!ha
