Guest guest
Y'know, this is a silly question but...you buy a BP monitor, you check your BP at home. When? And why? And what can you do if it's high anyway? (I know, call doc, get ACE prescription upped?) I don't want to get compulsive about BP (I'm already compulsive about checking my BG!) ...but when do you guys decide it's time to check your BP? Do you do it on a regular basis? Regular time? Or when you feel weird? What are the parameters? I mean, we check our BG and if it's high we can do something; if it's low we can do something But BP? A good brisk walk of a half hour (at least) is good; if there are some hills involved that's even better. If the weather is awful you could mallwalk -- I did that all winter. Or...anything aerobic I suppose jumping rope would do it...or running up and down stairs. (but this isn't terribly exciting). Or jumping jacks. An exercise bike -- or a real bike ride. You get the idea. Diabetics should be doing regular exercise anyway, as part of your daily regime. You could find out how effective this is by checking your BG before and after exercise You'll be pleased with the results, I'm sure. Guest guest
By checking your BP at home and keeping a log, you will know if your medication is working. Also, some people have high BP at the doctors office, and normal at home. Guest guest
Vicki: I check my blood pressure at home. Actually, I have been checking it occasionally for many years as I was an orderly at a hospital from 1961 to 1963 and bought and used a bp cuff then and have replaced it several times over the years. I bought my present, digital cuff about three years when I went on BP medication. I check approximately four or five times a week, at different times of the day. Something to remember is that when you check at the doctors office your bp might be abnormally high because of the anxiety of being at the doctor's office and the only way to get a true picture of your blood pressure is to check it under different circumstances and at different times. Strange, at least to me, is it is at it's lowest right after I come back from a long walk. I would think that it would be elevated at that time. Yesterday, I went to my doctor to have it checked and it was 130/80. This was the first time it was that low at the doctor's office since I can remember. My goal is 120/70 especially since I am taking two medications to lower it. Erwin
Guest guest
Vicki, I not only have high bp, but migraines as well. The bp meds and the meds to prevent migraines have to be balanced very carefully because they're both meds that can be used for bp. So when adjusting those or adding the ACE inhibitor, my doctor wanted me to be able to check and see what was happening if I felt " off. " Also, for people having bp problems, sometimes keeping a log of bp levels can be key in discovering patterns that can help with treatment. Vicki I check mine when I feel weird, different times of the day about 3 times a week mostly. The main reason I take it is to keep a check on how things are. If they aren't right, then I know I need to do something about it, and that can be via medication, what I eat and how active I am. So far so good. Guest guest
Vicki > And what can you do if it's high anyway? (I know, > call doc, get ACE prescription upped?) Not necessarily. I was getting spot BPs in the 160/70s with a wrist cuff meter until I looked at the manufacturer's website. I had understood that the BP had to be measured with the cuff held higher than my heart but that was a big mistake. The BP has to be measured with my ELBOW higher than my heart otherwise I get false high readings. This was confirmed when my physician ordered a 24-hour BP; it showed a daytime average of 124/70 and a nighttime average of 124/69. I thought that was good but he said, no, that is bad. Nighttime average should be significantly lower than daytime average. The same average day and night suggests diabetes-sourced neuropathy affecting the nerves to the heart. Treatment: further 24-hr BP tests every 3 months for a year to confirm the diagnosis and then he will consider what to do next. I guess that means that the damage is irreversible but he didn't know how to break the news to me! The WHO recommends that BP readings always be taken in groups of three with at least 1 minute interval between them. Discard the first reading and take the average of the next two. -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- Von: An: <diabetes_intonelist> Gesendet: Samstag, 25.
