Guest guest
Problem is Pat, most Americans have *no* will power. There is no such thing as a little bit. One bite of a good food means 100% full indulgence with most Americans. Guest guest
Well I do not think it is exclusive to Americans. I think we could take a look at human nature. So many of us, me for sure, go more by feelings than thinking. I have found distracting myself helps a lot. Am thinking of taking a night course in something to keep productively occupied. Thing is they are so darn expensive! Rita > What is that old saying? > " In for a penny, in for a pound. Guest guest
also, Rita, a big glass of water before eating will make you feel full. Re: Confused! Harry I agree. What I had in mind was " I feel like more quantity of food. " This may be related to taking time to eat slowly so the brain gets the message of fullness. Rita > Never deny the truth of a feeling. Guest guest
Is this mainly in reference to those people who have type 2 diabetes or is it Type 1 as well? As I'm a type 1 and basically I would be having to many hypos on that sort of diet of 15 grams per meal. Even if I cut back on my insulin dosages. Guest guest
I think it would mostly depend on the type of insulin one uses. It would also depend on frequency of glucose monitoring. For instance I use two forms of insulin: Lantus, a once per day dose of long-acting insulin and Humalog, a short-acting insulin. I also measure my glucose level before meals, then I count the carbs consumed and two hours after the meal I measure the glucose level again. This is required in order to determine the proper amount of short-acting insulin that is required to handle the carbs consumed. It is a trial and error activity at first until one finally figures how much insulin to use to deal with the carbs consumed. My monthly glucose average is around 102, which will give me an A1C reading, when it is done, of slightly over A1C of 5.0. I try to run a tight ship regarding my glucose levels in order to avoid diabetic complications that happens, when one allows their glucose levels to fluctuate up and down from high to low and low to high. This method of glucose management in the diabetic is available to type1's and type 2's. If you wish to have tight control, consult with your physician to see if he/she will prescribe these medications. I taught my physician about doing tight control by using this list serve to manage and teach me first on how to do it. Guest guest
! I simply cannot understand it, I always thought I had reasonable intelligence. There must be a glitch in my brain. I am still in dos and find computers bewildering! Sigh. I listened to the first tape by jaws for windows and it went so fast and turned so many corners, I said I'll stick to dos thanks. Guest guest
Hi . I am a type 1 diabetic for 26 years and follow 15 grams per meal. That equates to 1.5 units of humalog to cover my breakfast, lunch, and 2 units of humalog to cover dinner. I also take ultralente for long acting. With low carbing, you have to check your bgs 2 hours past eating to catch any lows. I don't run low all that much, my lows are around 63 at times but mostly, pre meal is 80 and my 2 hour post meal test is 120 or less. By doing this, my a1c readings are 5.3. I simply started by limiting each meal to 15 grams of carbs and starting with the ratio of 1 unit of H per 15 grams. In about 2 weeks, I got the correct figures for each meal by watching my 2 hour post tests. Once I got each 2 hour post test to 120 or less, I knew I got the ratio down. Breakfast 1.5 units of H per 15 grams, lunch 1.5 units of H per 15 grams, dinner 2 units of H per 15 grams. If I want more than 15 grams at a meal, for example, 30 grams for breakfast, then I just double up my dose to 3 units since normally, it is 1.5 units per 15 so 3 units per 30. After 60 grams, my ratios do not work so I can not go over 60 grams per meal. hope this helps some. Guest guest
While there is a learning curve to master in learning windows compared to DOS, it would be best for the blind person to have a windows system, since JAWS develops software today primarily geared to deal with windows programs. In fact you can get the JFD free of charge, since it is now outmoted, obsolete, caput. The program works in a DOS system quite well, but who are developing DOS programs these days? The answer is practically no body. If you have a JFW (Jaws For Windows) program, then it would be wise for you to have a windows system. Then the tutorial for learning windows and JAWS would be easier to learn and master. Besides you would be learning a modern system rather than an outmoted one like DOS. I speak from experience having tried to learn a windows system while using jaws for DOS, and I can say without reservation it doesn't work. After all Microsoft owns the DOS system, so even Microsoft programs in windows these days and not DOS. Guest guest
oh those jaws tapes are terrible for most. It is like any teacher, you have to find the write one that talks your talk. If the teacher doesn't talk your talk, you won't learn. Keep looking for one that talks your talk. I don't know your finances, but adaptive aid trainers can come on site and train you how to use the computer and jaws and you can tape it and review it when they leave. This is how I and many had to learn jaws and windows. Guest guest
Rita, There is no glitch in your brain. I tried to learn the windows system for three months with utter frustration each day. I constantly failed. I finally realized that my teacher was teaching me how to use a windows system, while at the same time I was using a DOS system. The two system are incompatible, and no matter how hard you try to make them compatible, it just won't work. When I switched to a windows system and jaws for windows program, I learned immediately and quickly. I was able to master the word processing program and the email program within three months by using a compatible program and system. Be sure you are using a compatible program and a compatible system or else you are doomed to failure every day. Guest guest
Harry and , I do have the software for dos only. It would cost a lot to buy windows software. Then too there is that terrifying word " install " . I did have a man come to teach me right here at home using my machine and I learned the mained thing I wanted and that is how to e-mail. I love this. There's a lot I do not know how to use, but then there is a question of time. I was told there is google and I do what is called a limited search. I tried to get a copy of the modern version of the Hippocratic Oath. Only got a few sentences. Oh well. It that worth the hundreds of dollars to get software, and pay for individual instructions? I am in no way especially interested in keeping with modernity per se. If I were working I certainly would have to keep up. For personal use only I am pretty satisfied. Sure I wish I could do a little more, but not worth the price. I am retired and just making it by the skin of my teeth. You know things are just going up up up . Medicine, rent, food. Rita who totally admires you guys!

Guest guest
Believe me when I say I understand. I remember well the times I was unable to even afford to buy a cup of coffee or a glass of tea, and I was satisfied with just plain water. , which was free. I did not like poverty then, and I do not like it now. When you depend on the state to give you what you need or desire, you may get it in due time, but it will be at the choosing of the state and not you. Guest guest
The insulin I have is Humalog: Morning - 8 sometimes 6 , lunch 6, tea 6. Humalin: morning - 8 and before bed 8. I basically do a test before each meal which helps me decide how much insulin I need to take or cut back as I sometimes have low levels around meal times. If my levels are elevated I cut back on my carbs instead of increasing my insulin. I usually don't do any test after meals, but on the odd occasion when I'm having a low level day I test or when I'm having a high day, especially when I've had a hypo in my sleep. But they a few and far between these days. I suppose I should admit that sometimes I have trouble keeping a good average level, regardless if I eat and do the same thing each day. One day it will be fine and I have an average level of 6 (108) and then the next day I can range from 6 to 11 (108 to 198). I do 2 25 minute walks each day as this is another way for me to keep my levels in a good range but when I change my routine and can't do my walks it sure plays up with my levels. After reading the many e-mails on this list I will probably try a few things out to see if they make a difference when I go for my next batch of test around June. Guest guest
, Are the numbers reported below your glucose readings or the number of units of Humalog you inject? I also use Humalog, but I would never think of taking a dose of it before bedtime, unless I had at least two or three hours to get a bedtime glucose reading before I went to bed.
