Around here, we do get reimbursed a little higher for a home visit than an office visit, but by the time you calculate in your travel time, it is less " per hour. " . Steve does them infrequently and also only for those that are home-bound.  He typically blocks the last appt of the morning and does them over lunch.  No acute visits - those have to figure a way to get in.  The families really appreciate not having to coordinate transportation for follow-up appts, and Steve usually works it so that he does them all on the same day in the same part of town.

Google " CPT home visits " and you will find more explanations. I've never been denied payment for one, but I think I've only done them for Medicare and Blue Cross. I only do them for medical necessity (not just patient convenience), and I document that in my notes. Contrary to what some of the articles say, they do not pay better than office visits, or even as well for the total time you spend, at least in my area.---Sharlene

Myria, Which insurance company wouldn't pay you for home visits at all?---Sharlene

I also try my best to only do these before lunch so I have as much time as I need without impacting the rest of my patients. I love being able to get out of the office and see patients in their natural environment. JI think home visits are cool and highly recommend them. Good luck!
