Group,I’m not sure if any of you remember, but about 7 years ago I hired a neighbor and patient of mine to work in my office doing some database analysis. She only worked a short amount of time because her goal was to continue on to medical school. She is my age (46 now) and had quite an interesting life journey, but even though she was older than a typical student and the mother of 4 wonderful kids, she was determined to become a physician.  Well, in 8 days, she graduates AOA from the local medical school and will continue her journey as a Family Medicine intern at the residency right around the corner from my office.

I bring it up because I find it to be a wonderful and rare experience to watch someone go from neighbor to patient to employee to medical student (she rotated through my office as a first and second year) to now a colleague! Too often the everyday grind wears us down until we are uncertain as to whether medicine is our calling. But on the 20th anniversary of my own graduation from medical school, I have the pleasure of watching someone who has worked her whole life to do what we do finally realize her dream. How wonderful and inspiring.

Nice, nice, nice! I too changed careers midlife. The nicest part is that she now sees how good it really can be with your example. :) To: Sent: Friday,

Don’t know. I would love to. She has a warm, caring and calming personality which will make her a wonderful family physician, but I think she is still interested in academia. I’ll continue to work on her J. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of H. KimSent: Friday, May 11, 2012 10:02 AMTo: Subject: RE: A happy moment Very nice story…. Are you going to hire her? Dear , what a nice story. I think you forgot to mention that probably because of interaction with you and your practice she choose to go into family Medicine. we need people passionate about family medicine/ primary care and patients, we want caring and smart people in primary care.it is really cool to see people follow their dreams and pursue Medicine. Every day my patients reminds me why I chose this path ( yeah you will find ungrateful ones).I enjoy whenever I am talking to my patients and teaching them and caring for them. I am happy to see , that you were able to see your finger print in that Doctor in training's life.you see we don't only touch patient's journeys but influence everybody that is

around. Congrats again, Adolfo To: Sent: Friday, May 11, 2012 10:35 AM Subject: RE: A happy moment

Thanks Adolfo,I would never take credit for helping her choose family medicine, but out of the 8 or so students I have had rotate through my office since I opened up, the majority have gone into Family Medicine (with peds a close second). I agree wholeheartedly if med students can get a glimpse beyond the nightmare of administrative insanity which engulfs most primary care offices and instead see the true essence of the doctor-patient relationship, more would choose primary care. I tell all my students that by the time they finish residency, either primary care will be dead or it will be far better than it is now (in terms of reimbursement and administrative minutia), and that it is incumbent on those of us currently practicing to help forge the second path. Perhaps they believe we, the IMP movement and others working toward that goal, will actually change things. In any case, their faith helps strengthen my resolve.   From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Adolfo Enrique TeranSent: Saturday, May 12, 2012 12:19 PMTo: Subject: Re: A happy moment Dear , what a nice story.
