You've gotten so many replies, some sounded right.. some sounded not right. I

know someone who is on 1500 mg of MS Contin (VERY large amount of slow acting

morphine).. and he is still taking meds (percocet) for break thru pain. So.. it

isn't for people on slow acting drugs only. (though that is the preferred

partnership). It isn't for those on small dosages only. It isn't for those on

nsaids only.. or narcotics only. It is at the discretion of the doctor.. as an

additive therapy. For example... the reason I am on it? I take slow acting

morphine... which helps me. Doesn't get rid of my pain, but it helps me live

and move. If my pain isn't managed by that drug, we increase it. BUT..

sometimes instead of increasing the meds.. you use an additive (such as my

percocet). So.. today, for example. I took my ms contin at 5am. But by 9am, I

was in a substantial amount of pain due to my body.. rain, whatever. So, I took

a percocet. If I don't take the add on med for break thru pain, my pain is no

longer managed by the MS contin. Instead, I always work at a deficit. I'm

always trying to chase the pain. The reason I take ms contin, is to keep my

pain at a certain manageable level. If it goes to much above that level, the ms

contin doesn't reach it... so I need additional meds. Now.. if I take too many

additional meds, they realize that I am in need of either moving up my dosage of

ms contin... or moving to another drug.

That's straight from a Pain management doctor/specialist.

Sandie,

This is exactly what I do. I take Morphine Sulfate ER every 8 hrs, then I have

MSIR for breakthru to take 1-2 times per day, but during this cold front and

winter storm we just came through, of course I have needed more of the

breakthru..

Tommie.. you and I are on the same track almost. I am taking my MS Contin...

and then using percs for breakthru. (arthritis meds and another for swelling

too). Yesterday, and definitely today.. I'll be using more breakthru meds for

sure.
