I too get annoyed that my uninsured can't use any of the truly discounted lab services. But having never practiced in any other state I can't comment. I take traditional insurance so can comment there either. To:

AS a former new yorker, I am just curious about other IMPS that practice in New york state.Do you find the state is difficult to deal with or more flexible than other states in terms of an IMP practice? How about in just general terms? State medical society is helpful or painful?

I had heard they have very restrictive definitions of what constitutes insurance, and curious whether charging a patient a membership fee and seeing them in your practice constitutes "selling insurance" and putting you in legal trouble.

I am particularly annoyed since I have some family members that are getting genetic testing done through 23andme.com. But since the company does not have a lab license in new york state, they can send you a kit but you CAN'T give a sample or send it from new york state. Under penalty of law. If I understand this correctly.

Basically you have to spit in the tube out of state and return it out of state. Or else!Family will take a trip to Jersey to do this. I am not a HUGE proponent of personal genomics, but I did discover I myself have a homozygous mutation of my C677T gene, which effects my homocysteine level amongst other things. It did prompt me to check my homocysteine level, which was higher than I anticipated. Want to see if anyone else needs similar therapy .
