Guest guest
Interesting problem. I had a elderly gentleman reporting what he reported as daily melana for months. Now as he was hemodynamically stable and didn’t appear pale, I felt the dark stool was probably dietary but we would do a hemoccult to make sure. Well LabCorp no longer offers routine hemoccult. At least I couldn’t find an order for it. It only gives the iFOB. SO I ordered a “gastric hemoccult” with the source of “STOOL”. So what did the lab tech do? Changed the order to represent the sample and did an iFOB. I can’t afford to buy my own kit for the 2 a year that this might come up and he was Medicaid so I wouldn’t have gotten paid for it. What should one do?
