>Jung conceded that the practice of yoga can produce to a remarkable extension of consciousness, but it cannot lead to an egoless state,

I agree, and its important to understand this because the ego has been receiving a hell of a bashing from all the New Age

nonsense floating around, also selflessness is not egoless, even Mother Theressa had an ego, and what an ego. How can

there be an egoless state? Consciousness is the ego, I AM THAT I AM. However this should not be confused with the term

egotistical. In the alchemical art there is a state of the pure ego, as being the Gold of the Philosopher's, the Divine Son of

the SUN.

Carl G. Jung in his "Man and his Symbols" page 162 states the following regarding the ego in a psychological aspect.

"It seems as if the ego has not been produced by nature to follow its own arbitrary impulses

to an unlimited extent, but to help to make real the totality -the whole psyche. It is the ego

that serves to light up the entire system, allowing it to become conscious and thus to be

realized. If for example, I have an artistic talent of which my ego is not conscious, nothing

will happen to it. The gift may as well be none existent. Only if my ego notices it can I bring

it into reality. The inborn but hidden totality of the psyche is not the same thing as a

wholeness that is fully realized and lived."

Julius Evola in his "Hermetic Tradition" states the following on the ego in an alchemystical aspect.

"It is in the richness of the scum, ashes, dregs, and other residue of the earth, where in reality

the "titan" hides. It is there in that the "Diadem of the King" and the true gold of the philosophers

is found."

" Here again, by act of awakening and being awakened at the same time(the deep powers

produce a transfiguration of the principle that has awakened them, in which, in the final

analysis, they will participate), the mineral body, so to speak, returns the ego to the consciousness

of its primordial and absolute act, of which the body expresses petrification, the neutralized state,

sleep, and the mute state of slavery. The silver then is transmuted to Gold, not only as life

and "light" (since spirit and body now form a single thing), but also as pure ego .
