Toni, have u read THE JESUS MYSTERIES by Freke n Gandy. It is an excellent summary of recent scholarship but read footnotes! The positive is that he looks at the positive, symbolic, gnostic thread that is hidden yet revealed.

Tim visited me last summer n Greg had him to speak at his Kansas City Jung grp. He is a VERY special person n his subsequent bks are fascinating.

U wld love them.

Dear Alice,

Being impatient as I am, I ordered the books when they first appeared here on the lists. I agree with you, it was an eye opener in many ways. I think I have read all by both authors that are on Amazon and relished them...tho' occasionally I has a small concern, which I mentioned here long since. "Jesus and the Lost Goddess" was the first I read, if I remember rightly. Ehrmans;" The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture " also relatively new (1993). {I have since scoured Amazon for others on the same subject. Most are more scholarly. Some of the ones I already had were a bit dated, and left out the most recent work. This is one of the studies I have been at for years. Old Testament first, and that is also jumping with recent revisions and discoveries. There is a lot of ferment around these subjects, which were relatively quiet 20 years ago. Also Gnosticism seems to have become popular nowadays in people interested in these subjects in general.

All these are my "curl up on the couch with pen" books which I now have the leisure to read and savor. If you have some other suggestions, i would be delighted.

And Alice, I always read all footnotes, all bibliographies, and all prefaces and Forewords.Even back covers...you are talking to an ancient librarian whose job it once was to be "acquisition librarian" the most marvelous of all jobs where one can decide what the library and the system needs on their shelves.

Besides footnotes are part of my nature, I think, to get as much as I can squeeze out of anything printed.

It must have been a pleasure to meet him, they are on a path many are now following, and some were there before, but those works were not for the general reader and his is. I might even have asked some questions had I had such an opportunity.

much love,

Toni
