How did small groups present narrative material to each other when it became clear enough that this material could be re-represented and played over? There was proto-theatre in Ancient Egypt (where else??). There's a "script" of sorts chiseled into a monument at Edfu that is the text of a ritual, "The Triumph of Horus." And there is a text of a ritual in celebration of Ra that was written down and performed yearly. This ritual has parts written out, which included women. More than that, it's the first road show. The "props," in this case statues of the gods, were loaded on a barge and taken to towns down the Nile, unloaded, ritual performed, then repeated at more towns along the way. This proto-theatre was a millenium before 5th Century BCE Athens, where the great glories were born.
