Guest guest
At six months my daughter got a UTI and after FINALLY determining she didn't have Spinal Mengingitis (so yes, they told me she was pretty much going to die) they scheduled her for a VCUG, the X ray version of the bladder test for Urinary Reflux. They did as you mentioned, filled her bladder up fill with 'dye' and cath'd her. Slowly they released it and we watched on monitors what her bladder was doing until she was empty of the dye. Since this is in real-time the Dr. sat with me as we watched the monitor and showed me what the bladder was doing. It actually looked like a little hiccup and the bladder was pushing the urine back up into the kidneys. So the dianosis was Urinary Reflux. She was a stage one on the Right side and Stage two on the Left side. So we were given options at that time. Surgery to correct the reflux, or antibiotics (Furadantin) to protect the kidneys while we 'wait and see' if her little body would correct the reflux on its own. With or without the surgery she was going on the antibiotics for awhile because her kidneys are so small we couldn't risk damaging them. So since she'd just gotten out of surgery we opted for the 'wait and see' unless of course she came up with another UTI then we'd re-assess. For one year she stayed on the antibiotics and no UTI's. She literally just had her re-testing done two weeks ago. We did the renal ultrasound which she hated...the gel was cold and she had to held down. Then we also did a nuclear version of the original VCUG test. She was put into an MRI type machine, completely strapped down, cath'd, and filled with a radio-active dye this type. The results were not in real-time, just raw data. This is supposed to be a much more thorough test and no x-ray so safer for the patient. We got the results back and we're thankful we waited, her body corrected the reflux and she is now two weeks off of the antibiotics and thriving! Just get good tests and retest if you have to. My opinion is that this doctor did not complete the proceedure and didn't perform a thorough test. Sorry --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.
