Dear AO, Thanks to you and to Deb for this response to a truly frightening trend toward the ultimate idolitry - that slavish reverence to the written Word by the literalists among us. I agree with your assessment Alice, and with your alarm/response. And many attempts at such a catechism are being attempted in our day. One of the best, IMO, was Edinger's 1996 THE NEW GOD-IMAGE (perhaps his last work). Here is a quote from it (pg 88): " If we are not members of a particular creed that tells us what God wants - which is the function of a religious creed, it tells you and then you obey those religious rules, the laws of God according to that creed and you are justified - but if you are not that fortunate, then one must discover it for oneself. That is where the analytic process, that is where the process of the serious attention to the unconscious, comes in. I think there is reason to believe, which is implied by what Jung is saying, that even God does not know what his will is until the individual makes the discovery. It may be that consciousness happens simultaneously to both the ego and the Self. [WOW, WHAT A THOUGHT!] If one is not able to accept a conventional, collective answer to the question of 'what is God's will?', then one is obliged to look for an individual, experiential answer. One must then seek the divine will for oneself. It is a search of discovery, and it becomes a depth psychological adventure for each individual who undertakes it. " [AND IT SEEMS TO BE THE RARE FEW AMONG US WHO DELIBERATELY (OR ACCIDENTALLY) STEP INTO THIS UNCHARTED TERRITORY] This must certainly be an element of the new catechism, of many - to be sure. I also stumbled upon this website today. It is very rich with the kind of symbolism of which you have been speaking to us these past few years.
