Guest guest
This is funny: there's a talk radio controversy over the first Muslim elected to Congress (from Minnesota) who was reportedly planning to hold a Quran at the swearing-in ceremony. It's funny because there are four layers of irony to it: first, Representatives don't actually swear on Bibles or anything else, and they've always carried whatever they wanted to the ceremony. Second, what they're swearing to do is defend the Constitution, which says there can be no religious test for holding office. Third, the whole point of swearing on a holy book is to be accountable to what one believes in. Swearing on someone *else's* holy book defeats the point of doing it at all. Lastly, the Bible (specifically, Jesus in 5) says not to swear oaths, on anything. I'm wondering how many conservative pundits will step into that one before it gets pointed out that swearing on Bibles is unchristian. I believe Jehovah's Witnesses already know that, but nobody listens to them. Check out the all-new Yahoo! Mail beta - Fire up a more powerful email and get things done faster.
