Yes, Xanax is one of the Benzodiazepines, which should be avoided.

Benzodiazepine Website

Older people more sensitive - problem possibly due to less cortical

Benzodiazepines may negatively affect cognition and produce sedation,

Hazardous Benzodiazepine Regimens in the Elderly: Effects of Half-

Life, Dosage, and Duration on Risk of Hip Fracture

June 2001 - Even at modest doses, including some low doses currently

advocated in prescribing guidelines for older patients, treatment

with benzodiazepines appears to increase the risk of hip fracture.

Patients appear to be particularly vulnerable immediately after

initiating therapy and after more than 1 month of continuous use.

Benzodiazepines with shorter half-lives appear to be no safer than

longer half-life agents. Clinicians should be aware of these risks

and weigh them against potential benefits when prescribing for

elderly patients.

Why such strong feelings about benzos?

Message by , also includes info re: an exception to the no benzo

warning, Klonopin, that has been used with success for RBD (REM

Behavior Disorder) by Dr. Boeve.

I wasn't aware if it was but it sure did the trick for her last weekend and

gave her a much-needed break from her misery. I guess I'm going to have to

learn all the scientific or chemical names for all these drugs too now

<sigh>...maybe I can give up cooking for my family or grocery shopping to

find the time. ARGH! They didn't use ativan because of the LBD...

My mom has been on so many drugs for so many years, on and off, that she

probably has built up a tolerance for then anyway. I don't know of anything

that she hasn't been on, at one time or another!

His,

Sherry
