When it's angulated or tilted back it compresses the brainstem from the front, much like ACM does from the back. I think I read in Milhorat's paper that about 12% of ACMer's also have basilar impression/invagination and one form of BI is the tilted odontoid. If I'm completely confused (Darlene, Kathleen) feel free to correct me now, cause this is how I understand it. Peppi >> Hi Peppi, That's where I'm confused too. I've had two NSG's call mine retroflexion of the odontoid and one called it BI. I don't know if it has to be tilted a certain extend to actually be called BI or not. Another thing I wonder, is are you born with this, like the Chiari or does it develop overtime and can having a laminectomy make it worse due to possible instability from having the laminectomy? Are basilar invagnation and impression the same thing? Any input would be appreciated. Judy R.
