The odontoid is the bone at the top of the vertebra located directly behind

the back of the mouth. When it's angulated or tilted back it compresses the

brainstem from the front, much like ACM does from the back. I think I read

in Milhorat's paper that about 12% of ACMer's also have basilar

impression/invagination and one form of BI is the tilted odontoid.

If I'm completely confused (Darlene, Kathleen) feel free to correct me now,

cause this is how I understand it.

Hi Peppi,

That's where I'm confused too. I've had two NSG's call mine retroflexion of

the odontoid and one called it BI. I don't know if it has to be tilted a

certain extend to actually be called BI or not. Another thing I wonder, is

are you born with this, like the Chiari or does it develop overtime and can

having a laminectomy make it worse due to possible instability from having

the laminectomy?

Are basilar invagnation and impression the same thing?

Any input would be appreciated.
