This sounds like renal artery stenosis (blocked artery to a kidney). IgAN

itself usually affects both kidneys equally. But, it certainly is possible

to have IgAN plus a blocked or partially-blocked renal artery.

I thought the same as Clair. When my kidneys were checked using ultrasound (about 3 years before dialysis) they were both found to be shrunken. One also had cysts.

Re: just wondering

HI Connie, Now I am confused. My neph told me that when it comes to IGA whatever was happening in one kidney was happening in the other. I just assumed that both of my kidneys were in the same condition. How did they determine that one of Ralphs was not working at all? One of my brothers was ready and willing to donate a kidney to me 3 months ago. During the physical, they found one kidney was much smaller and only functioning at 10%. He does not have IgAN. So, sometimes these things just happen. Some people are born with only one kidney. I really don't think the big difference in Ralph's kidneys has nothing to do with the IgAN. Just my opinion.
