Foot pain and swelling

Hi, I do not post here often. I've been diagnosed with CMT 1A for

about 10 years.

I have the swelling and pain the the area of my foot right behind the

smaller 3 toes. It it mostly on the top area of my foot, but does

affect the ball of my foot also. Is this common or is there something

else going on?

Thanks,

Angie

Angie,

My thoughts are perhaps a change to a wider shoe may help, or perhaps

you may have an infection or possibly a broken toe. Have you seen a

doctor about this? Have you tried using ice on your foot to relieve the

pain?

Filing for disaibility is a long involved, and often frustrating process and now

is even more difficult to get. Try everything else first, possibly switching to

another job, but still in your medical profession.

Yes, that occured with me too in the beginnings of the disorder. It usually

occured after wearing shoes for a long period of time. I released the pain the

best I could by massaging my feet with my hands. After a couple of years it

went away.

Angie,

I don't know the extent of neuropathy in your feet, but my

recommendation is to get it x-rayed. When the nerves stop working, sometimes

swelling is the only indication that there is something wrong.

I had a similar condition, but it didn't hurt like I had broken bones. Well,it

turned out that I had broken bones. Unfortunately they never healed, continued

to break down and developed into a charcot condition. I had to have the foot

fused with replacement cadaver bones, and sometimes I wish they had just

amputated it instead.

Angie,

That sounds like it could be a neuroma. It won't show up on an

x-ray, except an astute radiologist may notice fullness in the soft

tissue (which might just get chalked up to the swelling). My sister

and I have both had neuromas in that same spot and they showed up

acting just like that. It is caused by the bones (metatarsals) rubbing against

each other -- either because of too narrow or high heeled shoes, or because of

the usuall CMT foot shape -- causing nerve damage. Like we didn't have enough

trouble already.

Since nerves are regenerative the damaged spot will send out new axons trying to

meet up with other severed axons until you end up with a tangle of nerves

sprouting from a single bundle running between the bones. The result is that the

pinching happens easier and easier, because of the size of the thing and leads

to eventual chronic pain and swelling.

I was so frustrated with mine because I was always SO carefull to wear good

shoes since I injured my self so easily. I can't tell you how often I heard the

" high-heel " lecture from well meaning folk. Yeah, right, heels = no feeling in

my toes for 3 months. So instead of ditching the heels I got my first pair of

orthotic inserts.
