Shortly after the folks at Merck posted their

Home Edition to the Net, our friends at Bartleby.com posted Henry

Gray's " Anatomy of the Human Body " at

<A HREF= " http://www.bartleby.com/107/ " >

http://www.bartleby.com/107/ </A>.

That's right, folks. Gray's Anatomy -- all 1,396 pages of text and

all 1,247 illustrations -- is now online! FREE!

Even though the real-world version of Gray's Anatomy in kind of thick

and intimidating (like me), the online version is actually quite easy

to both read and use. The online version is divided into almost 300

different sections from embryology to surface anatomy. You can browse

through any of the book's sections from the main homepage at

http://www.bartleby.com/107/ .

For more in-depth information, however, check out the book's

encyclopedic subject index at

<A HREF= " http://www.bartleby.com/107/s0.html " >

http://www.bartleby.com/107/s0.html </A>

The subject index is deceptively simple, but it contains almost 13,000

different entries that link you directly to their respective pages in

the text.

Of course, Gray's Anatomy is most famous for its astounding

illustrations of the human body. And this is where the online version

of the book excels. You can browse through thumbnail versions of all

of the book's 1,247 illustrations at

<A HREF= " http://www.bartleby.com/107/indexillus.html " >

http://www.bartleby.com/107/indexillus.html </A>

To see a larger magnification of a particular illustration, just click

on its thumbnail. Some of the illustrations are rather large by Net

standards and may take a while to download, but their clarity is

amazing. In fact, many of the illustrations are in color and haven't

changed much since the first edition of Gray's Anatomy was published

in 1859! [i guess Mr. Gray believed in getting it right the first

time.]
