Guest guest
I have been using a Bowflex and think it is great! I don't have time to get to the gym and having the Bowflex in the house really takes a lot of excuses away! LOL What I like about it is the way it feels. I've tried other machines but this one is very much like free weights. Since it uses a cable system you have to recruit those stabilizer muscle in the exercises. The cables do restrict some movements, however, but there are more than enough variations to really hit muscle groups from different angles. I added a squat attachment and lat bar so I can pretty much cover all bases. I would recommend you go to the website at www.bowflex.com and request the free video. Then you can take a look at it when you want instead of trying to find the infomercial. You can also download a pdf of the manual which shows all of the exercises on a standard model. It takes a little getting used to but it does give you a workout. With 410 lbs of resistance it should keep me busy for quite a while! --Gene
Guest guest
Hi Have you thought about swimming, my physio recommended that I do it cos I used to go the gym before and my legs are quite strong and she said that swimming would be a good way to keep the strength in them. Hope you find something that works Joanne > I'm trying to find a workout on the 'net to tone my body up for the > summer, but most of the workouts I find consist of biking, running, > or going to the gym. Guest guest
Shoveling snow, ack! Seriously, you can make shoveling into an aerobic exercise by using a shovel with a long handle but a smaller-than-normal scoop, so that you don't have to bend your knees or your back. It will take you longer to shovel this way, but it turns an anaerobic activity into an aerobic one. It's so much damn fun, I spent about 9 hours doing this particular aerobic activity over the last two days. Here in DC, I shoveled my driveway for the 3rd time over the last two days. Also shoveled about 30% off the back deck just to give it some relief - also that's where my dryer vent is! Then shoveled out my heat pumps. The snow had reached 2 inches from the top of them. Then helped a neighbor shovel out a fire hydrant. When I finished, last night, went for a spin (what the hell) and the roads were deserted. Couldn't find any place to buy the Sunday Post. (Yes, I know it was Monday but I figured no one could get out yesterday to buy them.) Everything was closed except hospitals and pharmacies. Helped someone dig out who was stuck on a beltway on-ramp. About 18-20 " inches with a icy crust on top for that nice finishing touch. Oh, and another inch this morning. Best workout I've had in months. > I'm trying to find a workout on the 'net to tone my body up for the > summer, but most of the workouts I find consist of biking, running, > or going to the gym. Guest guest
J.C. - It sounds like it may be tough for you to get a cardio workout with your pain level. Have you tried the stationary bike with zero resistance? Can you walk for any length of time w/out too much pain? Swimming is a great suggestion, but I guess you can't get to a pool either, eh? My only other thought is an upper-body weight program. If it is possible for you to work out w/ weights, stick to light weights and high repetitions. Like I said, it will be hard for you to get a cardio workout without engaging the big, oxygen-hungry muscles like the quads, hams and glutes, but you'll still be able to get the heart pumping. Building a little muscle mass will keep the metabolism up and stimulate your body to secrete natural growth hormone -- neither of which could hurt, right? If you don't have weights, how 'bout push-ups, sit-ups and dips? It also couldn't hurt to pay a little extra attention to your diet. Stay away from the dense carbs (pasta, rice, sugary sweets) and stick to good, lean sources of protein and fruits & vegetables. HTH, Doug dougfromct2002@... > I'm trying to find a workout on the 'net to tone my body up for the > summer, but most of the workouts I find consist of biking, running, > or going to the gym. Guest guest
okay, thanks Chriss. Yesterday before I worked out I had a salad with beans, a little buffalo, veggies, & habanero salsa. you think my body will not be as effective at burning fat even though I had protein & complex carbs? I've never done much research on this stuff. it does make sense though that it would be better to work out maybe several hours after eating or before a meal. i used to work out for an hour at a time. now i go for 30 min. work-outs. if I have less energy, I go for 15 or 20 minutes. If I feel I have energy, I'll do a second 15 or 20 min. workout. the days I work double or go to school and then work, well, those days are pretty exhausting and it's VERY hard for me to work out. but the days I'm in school I'm walking a lot--up and down stairs and to my bus stops. better than nothing I guess. in nice weather (april-nov), I speed walk for 30 minutes, 5 days a week. then Kemal and I also do a moderate walk together. i'll try it and see if I can work out without eating on low energy days. maybe momentum will carry me through. thanks for the advice! Hugs, sheila P.S. sorry about the hair loss. you might consider shaving your head!!! Seriously! I shaved mine for 3 years. I wanted to do something wild and adventurous, but I don't smoke, don't drink, don't do anything too crazy. I couldn't afford to go mountain climbing, etc. So I shaved my head. It was great!!! It gave me tons of confidence!!! I looked great too! friends used to call me " Sinead O'Sheila!!! " LOL! I know when I am on the bike thing it says I did burn 56 calories.. that is just for that machine.. anyways i gotta run- i have lots of mail to check- take care girl!! Guest guest
Thats funny! I can't imagine shaving my head... My long curly hair has always been my trademark feature. I'm 39 and would really like to enjoy my last couple of years looking normal. I had to cut it a year and a half ago because so much was falling at once, that it tangled so badly every time I washed it, I could not comb it. It was cut, just under my ears! after being halfway down my back. It is just now shoulder length! So, its growing painfully slow too. It's always been grey however. I can remember having grey hair by the time I was 16 or so. My son does too. It has a pretty cool pattern though. Chunky sections of grey, kind of like the bride of frankenstein. Not really grey I guess, its very shiny, more like silver. I don't care about the color, as long as its " there " . I have a terrible cold too! It seems harder for us hypos to fight it off. I havent had a cold in ten years! now I have a doosey of one. take care of yourself... C.
Guest guest
Hi Chriss, Sorry you've gotten a nasty cold; I hope you'll feel better soon!! I also had very long hair for many years, except mine was straight. I got mine cut from a length that was down to my butt to just below ear level. This was back in 1991, I think, after I had lost all that weight. I wanted a different look. Then I just went on and shaved my head. Everyone thought I had cancer because they saw me drop so much weight in the span of a year, and then I went and shaved my head. My jobs at that time always put in the public's attention. Even people I didn't know knew me because I was working for the local newspaper and my picture was in the paper a lot. People would ask me and my co-workers if I had cancer. The answer was always a resounding " NO! " I'd tell them my story, and then later I would find out they didn't believe me, telling my co-workers how brave I was. Anyway, sounds like shaving your head is not an option for you. Your hair sounds very, very beautiful. I had a friend in high school who had grey hair. I've read somewhere it's a sign of either thyroid or adrenal problems, but I can't remember where I read it. You know, if the hair loss gets bad enough, you COULD consider a wig. I have a blonde one that I wear from time to time. My mom also wore one occasionally when I was a kid. I think wigs are really cool and love them. It's fun to be outrageous and bold sometimes!!! If you check out our home page, you can see a pic of me wearing my blonde hair. Many of these pics of me (including the blondie one) were taken before I was diagnosed with hypoT & Hashi's. We will hopefully update with more pics this summer. http://home.insightbb.com/~kemalandsheila/ I still don't have a link to my online art gallery (which is pitifully small right now). There's is a link to my poems and lyrics; however, we only have two there. We have tons more to add. I also need to scan pics of my previous artwork and get those there. We have so much to update...tons of stuff to do still, but we're hoping maybe this summer we'll get our homepage closer to where we want it. Kemal is going to do a complete redesign. Anyway, I love different colors. I'm getting ready to dye my hair red pretty soon!!! Anyway, the wig thing is just a thought. I know you love your own locks, but if the worst case scenario happens and you do lose your hair, at least there are wigs. Well, feel better Chriss!!! Catch ya later, Sheila Aprilcupcake@... wrote: Thats funny! I can't imagine shaving my head... My long curly hair has always been my trademark feature. Guest guest
I have a fairly physical job, lots of walking and lifting. So, I keep my workouts to three, sometimes four a week, depending on what else is going on. There are weekends when we bike or hike, so I don't do too much during the week when that's going on. I got through 20 mins of it.and am definitely sweating but feel like *I'm* the "oldie"!! It kind of sneaks up on you there! LOL What I do now is sweat along to the first 2 or 3 songs, then fast forward to the *last* 2 or 3 songs so the total workout is anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes long. The songs are more my speed, the steps are easier to do, I don't get so out of breath, and I *enjoy* rather than dread doing the workout. And doing it this way I get a warm up AND cool down instead of stopping abruptly while my heart is going at a high speed. I do this stuff on my *good* days! On my not-so-good days, I head for Sansone's 1-mile videos or 's original or Broadway Blast Off tapes. The *other* BlastOff's are just too loud, visually disturbing (so *bright* and flashy!), and way too fast for my old bones to keep up with. On my bad days, that's when I either just do tai chi or reach for 's Silver Foxes, his old, old videos done pre-Sweatin' (Get Started), his original one for the disabled (Reach for Fitness), or Izzolino's More to Love Fitness made especially for larger people. has since has WLS and stopped selling this from her web site, but Amazon still has them for sale. It's a great video, especially for super sized women like she was at the time she made it, who were just starting an exercise program and, like me, can't do what everyone else says to do - walk longer distances. I may be in my 50's now, but that Silver Foxes video of 's has been my favorite since I was in my 30's when it first came out, and just this year it was released on DVD for a very nice price. I bought it immediately, since I already wore out 2 tapes and have another in reserve right now. Sue in NJ
