Guest guest
, I've been doing an aquatics circuit for about 6 years now - I go about 4 times a week for an hour. Regular swimmming and biking have been good for me for years. I also do some Pilates and follow some exercises for inner core/back strengthening shown by a Physical Therapist. For years I also rode horseback. Not much opportunity for that now. And then there's my gardening... The key is to find something you love and you'll want to do it. Perhaps joining a gym or the Y and taking a class might be a way to start. Or ask a PT for some guidance, based on your needs. Guest guest
I think it depends on your progression. I love to walk, but my ankles are getting weaker so I am trying new types of exercise. Biking and swimming are great for CMTers, because they are low impact and they strengthen the leg muscles. Pilates is a great winter time home work out. I never really could use a tred mill because of abnormal gait. Remember not to push yourself too hard, over exercising is bad for CMTers, remeber to pace yourself. Start out slow and increase as you get stronger.
Guest guest
I am surprised that I can use a treadmill. I didn't think I could do it. I bought a cheap one that goes really slow. It has big handle bars that I never let go of.
Guest guest
Marin, I had a hard time climbing onto an elliptical. What type do you have?
Guest guest
- I have been using the eliptical machine five days a week for a few years now. I use the one that has stationary arms as my balance is gone. It is not as boring as the stationary bike. I easily burn 250-300 calories per day. Guest guest
: Soon after I was diagnosed I used an elliptical that I bought on TV for a few years but since then I am not able to climb on it either. I did find an elliptical at Planet Fitness that is very low to the ground to get onto and I was able to try it. I wish I had the money or space in my house to put it in. Guest guest
I'm new to CMT, was just diagnosed a few months ago and have been struggling with finding the right workout routine for me. I was very active before I started having the weakness in my left ankle which left me frustrated finding something to do. I'm finding the eliptical causes pain where my orthotic rubs against my foot. Biking seems to be much better at this point. Swimming is something that I'm considering next. Thanks for all the input everyone has given on this, it's been a big help. Guest guest
Neurologist and PT I have gone to all agree that swimming is best as it takes gravity out of the picture! I am sure Gretchen will agree. Jackie
