Guest guest
Carl: Good points. No further discussions from me on this subject. I was born and reaised in two homes constructed with genuine lath and plaster. The exteriord werte constructured from tar paper, chickenwire and stucco. In the interior walls were lath and plaster. Minimmal insulaton was used. If this type of construction is contrasted with modern day construction, we can see why we have a problem. The exterior is covered with slanted oriented board (formaldehyde resins as the blue) then chicken wire (sometimes chicken wire is not used) and then a thin coat of synthetic plaster. The interior walls are constructed dry with wall and other synthetics. Insulation is added that is held together with organic resins. Now add water to each situation. Which is more prone to have microbial growth? Now let us look at the foundations of earlier homes vs today. Earlier home had a trench and the foundation was then poured. If one looked at the level of the earth under the home and the yard, one found that they were either of equal height or that under the home was higher than the yard. This type of construction either reduced the amount of water that diffused from the yard to under the house or prevented such diffusion. In addition, the old concrete was not very porous. Today they dig the trench and either pour a slab or the foundation. Dirt is then piled up gainst the slab or foundation. This construction allows diffusion of water from the yard into the exterior wall or under the slab. The result is microbial growth. If a basment is involved the results are even worse. A water barrier is needed to prevent diffusion into the basement. I have found that homes with basements are heavily contaminated. Finally, just add the shoddy contruction of today and there is potential for great harm. Jack D. Thrasher, Ph.D. Toxicologist/Immunotoxicologist/Fetaltoxicologist www.drthrasher.org toxicologist1@...
