Unless your child has a disability or is under 18 years of age he is eligable

for health care insurance through your insurance or the state you live in. If a

child who is 18 and over with a disability they can continure receiving

Medicare. Children who are 18 and over with or without a disability may recieve

Medicaid or your states insurance if he or she is stated as an independent, not

a dependent of you. Their income has to be under a certain amount too. Go to

your local Social Services Department for information. Children 18 or over are

able to use their parent's insurance if they are in college. You would need to

check with individual insurances at what age they would discontinue their

membership to your insurance.

If you want to go the private route I would try Aetna. I had this insurance for

three years when I was not working. I had no problems at all with Aetna but

paid $300 for it monthly for individual coverage. This was Cobra insurance.

Blue Cross Blue Shield is also good.

For our son....he is 23 and was able to stay on Keystone Health Plan Central

because of his handicapped dependent status. Our drs. had to fill out forms

from my husbands employer...and then the insurance evaluated it. As long as

he is at home....and cannot fully support himself...he is covered...just

adding my two cents. :)

I have found it very hard to find private insurance. I have been turned

down due to having CMT. So, far I haven't found any carrier who will

provide me insurance. I heard good things about Aetna, but they are not

available in my geographic area.

Hi Carmella,

Nationally, the best insurance companies are:

Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans

United Healthcare

Aetna

All three are stable and reliable companies.  For individual plans, you'll want

to look at the contract details closely before making a decision, especially

pharmacy, out-of-network and out-of-area benefits, coinsurance liability, and

specialist access.  The provider network is also very important.  You can check

to see if his doctor(s) are in-network.

www.ehealthinsurance.com has a lot of information online, including contracts.

However, you can also contact an individual agent or broker in your area for

assistance.  The cost will be the same for you, regardless of whether you use an

agent or not.  A broker may be able to give you a better feel for the strongest

company in your area.

Agent = represents insurance company

Broker = represents you and can discuss many policies with you

Hope that helps.
