Guest guest
Hi Jim - My son has not experienced this yet, however, he also sees a neuro-opthamologist (at the suggestion of our family opthamologist) now sees him twice a year because of his CMT and the potential existing for nerve involvment of the eye such as you are experiencing. From what he told us it is not something that occurs frequently in younger patients but it has been noted in adult CMTers. Please keep us in the loop and pass on info as you feel comfortable sharing. Thanks > > Hello, > > I have just visited a neuro-opthamologist. Guest guest
I do remember being told early in CMT that this could happen and the eye doctor seems to look for this when i go. Jackie Optical Neuropathy? Hello, I have just visited a neuro-opthamologist. I started going to this guy becuase a physical therapist found that I had a 5th cranial nerve problem. The doctor performed several tests including a laser scan of the back of my eye. He said I had optic nerve thinning and optical neuropathy. Has anyone else run into optical neuropathy and/or optic nerve thinning? Are these things seen with CMT? Thank you, Jim
Guest guest
HI, COULD ANYONE TELL ME WHAT IS THE PROBLEM OR SYMPTOM OF A 5TH CRANIAL NERVE? I MEAN WHAT IS THE OUT COME? MY BROTHER IS 42 YEARS OLD AND HIS EYE DOCTOR JUST TOLD HIM HE HAS A NERVE PROBLEM IN ONE OF HIS EYES BUT, WE NEVER THOUGHT IT COULD BE RELATED TO CMT. From: phantomsec4@... Guest guest
What are the symptoms of optical neuropathy. What are the effects? When I see the eye doctor (who probably knows zip about CMT) should I tell him about this possibility? Ruth   Be kind. Everyone you meet is struggling with something. Guest guest
Ruth - absolutely tell your opthamologist about your CMT and possible optical involvement. Our eye physicians group has a neuro- opthamologist on staff... has been referred to see only him from now on. Instead of once a year we go twice a year just for better tabs to be kept on his eyes. If your eye doc doesn't know about CMT - bring him/her up to speed. Just a suggestion. > > What are the symptoms of optical neuropathy. What are the effects? Guest guest
I just went for new glasses and was told one of my eyes wasn't working together with my other eye and prescribed prisms lenses .He said my eyes were like 52% in one eye and 18% in the other called it a nerve issue with the eye .I asked if I should go for further testing? he said wear these new glasses and that will get the one eye working with the other again . I explained about my cmt and of course he never heard of it so he googled and said I doubt the eyes are effected???? He has no explanation why my eyes are doing this he said in a yr if it doesn't get better I might need to be tested for MS I'm like I have cmt that's a nerve issue eyes have nerves right?Do you think I should go for a second opinion ?I'd hate to be over stressing my optic nerves with these new glasses and lose my sight .In the mean time I'm stuck with poor vision until my eyes adjust . Guest guest
Okay, okay, okay .... I have a skewed view of life, and humor, ... but I'm laughing very hard on this one!! Oh, I'm laughing with you, too. " What are the symptoms of optical neuropathy? " Let's see .... maybe ... CAN'T SEE?! lol " What are the 'effects'? " Hmmm ... let's see, .... maybe ... RUNNING OVER DUCKS CROSSING THE ROAD?!? lol Oh, ... I feel much better now. lol ;-) P.S. Yes, tell your doctor. Otherwise, they'll assume you have a brain tumor. $$$$$$$$$$$$
Guest guest
Deb - I would run screaming from this doctor! If you can, find a neuro-opthamologist or call around until you find an opthamologist who at least knows about CMT. Perhaps your local MDA could make a referral...In any case - you have to pursue this. You are right to worry about ruining your vision with improper glasses. Best of luck...BTW - where do you live? Perhaps someone here would know where to refer you. I'm in the Orlando area and can make a suggestion if you are close. > > I just went for new glasses and was told one of my eyes wasn't working > together with my other eye and prescribed prisms lenses .He said my eyes were > like 52% in one eye and 18% in the other called it a nerve issue with the > eye .I asked if I should go for further testing? he said wear these new > glasses and that will get the one eye working with the other again . > I explained about my cmt and of course he never heard of it so he googled > and said I doubt the eyes are effected???? Guest guest
LOL! They want money, that is for sure. Too bad everything has to be exagerated and overrated. They should quit being so greedy and just be simple so less fortunate people have a chance to live a little too! In a message dated 4/14/2009 11:37:40 A.M.
