help - ammonia problem

So I took the advice of many and washed our new/safe clothes in a very

little bit of ammonia just in case we were sweating out mycotoxins.

Unfortunately, now I'm reacting to the ammonia that will not come out despite

numerous washings. My MCS is too severe to have experimented with this.

Because

we already had to replace our clothes, I'm wondering if they are

salvageable. BTW this is definitely NOT mycotoxins (I tested by wearing

clothes and

not washing them and I'm not reacting to them after I sweat in them. It's

also a different reaction entirely).

Should I soak the clothes in vinegar and then wash again? Or vinegar and

then baking soda and then soap? Or other?

I accidentally thought soaking them in baking soda would help and I created

a whole new chemical I think -- they smell like chlorine or something

pungent like that.

Thanks for any advice

Jill

I'm sorry to hear this. Ammonia works for me. Did you try washing them in

plain baking soda?

>Ammonia is very very toxic to me-I don't understand how anyone with MCS could

tolerate it.

I found that plain Borax (you buy it in a cardboard box in the detergent aisle

of any supermarket) is very non toxic and is a last chance savior for me. It has

no odor but is a super cleaner-my mother used it way back when-before we had Mr.

Cleans and Super Tide!

I also found that ammonia takes a LONG time to dissipate. I used to walk into

friends' houses and say did you wash your floor with ammonia? And they would

say, yeah, but three days ago. That's how powerful ammonia is. The good thing is

that eventually is does goes away. So maybe you need multiple washings and

airings of your clothes.

Good luck!

I am able to get many odors out of clothes by soaking them overnight in

powdered non-fat dry milk, rinse them, and then put them thru a full wash

cycle, with vinegar in fabric softener dispenser. I heard about this

several years ago on the MCS list and was very skeptical, but it does work

for me. Sometimes I have to air them out for awhile after that. I cannot

tolerate ammonia at all.
